The issue with choosing a 1155 board is that it is already a dead horse at this point. The last iteration of 1155 with Ivy Bridge has already been released, so 1155 has no real future. The 3770K would be the top line proc for that board and leave you with no upgrade path.

On the flip side Socket 2011 is due for Ivy-Bridge E sometime this year. Which would give a 2011 build a little more life cycle than 1155, but no much. Ivy Bridge E will be the last in the 2011 line as well.

With both socket sets being shelved and leaving no upgrade path, all that is left is Haswell which is still inbound, as the only real Intel path at the moment.

In the AMD camp things aren't rosy either at the moment. AMD is hemorrhaging both cash and talent and is teetering on being sold or possibly broken up. Most of their top executives and best engineers have already fled the company. They are selling off as many physical and intellectual properties as they can just to raise operating cash. Several of their recent product releases in both consumer and enterprise markets have landed with a thud. So if your looking at AMD for a system you need to ask yourself "Will they be here in the next year or so when I next do an upgrade?" Again a possible build with no future upgrade path.

So no matter which camp you're in, you have a precarious decision to make.

I respecfuly disagree, as 2012 and the being of 2013 has been where AMD has been climbing out of there hole.

I'm afraid not, Dark. AMD lost five billion dollars last year. Not to fret, though. I suspect someone will buy them, just like they bought ATI. The GPU brand alone is more than worth someone's time to pick up. I agree with the above caution for CPUs though. If AMD gets bought and the video card line is handed off, no big deal. The new products will just be PCIE devices just like the old ones and driver support will continue. even if the CPU brand is picked up, however, they may not continue making chips for the AM3+ platform.

Ironically I just came across an article on Fudzilla that is now detailing that Intel may push Ivy Bridge-E out to Q 3/4 of 2013. But at that point Haswell should be out, speculation says that Intel may just as well jump over Ivy Bridge E and straight into Haswell E.

Interesting. : http://www.fudzilla....e-delayed-to-q4

Oh no, this is nothing. We had a science fiction/fantasy vs thread in Jettisoned once that got resurrected like 5 or 10 times. It would quiet down for a month or two, then come back

interesting on the number graph which showed ATI doing so well what about the GTX 680 Or the titian. You can make any high-end card look good if you want to .

Im going to throw in my .02, everyone here is going to have an opinion. I have the 8150 BE at 4.6Ghz on air, and Sabertooth 990FX, with 16gb of Mushkin ram, a Saphhire 6950 2GB DiRT3 and win 7 64bit. My rig hasnt let me down, I get 60fps in MWO, 50fps in TombRaider, 70fps in Star Craft 2:HoS, and so forth and so on all on max settings. In some older games Crysis 2 and Metro2033 for example Ive seen 100fps. Above 30-40fps your not going to see much of a difference. I like to think that with all settings on Max Ultra w/e that at 30-40fps, thats gaming. Sure I could add another 6950 or upgrade to 79xx, but this will do for another few years. I didnt spend your budget, nowhere near it, and love every moment of it. In the end its down to personal experience and luck with everything working like it should. I've had an i5 that gave me trouble and would freak out at 45c, this 8150 Ive had to 58c and it didnt even hiccup. My brother has an i7 2600k and its nice, but he isnt seeing NOTICABLE performance above mine, and he spent $800 more than me. Maybe in benchmarks theres a few points to be won, but in real world performance its not noticable.

Wow, @ $450 bucks for a motherboard, you would think it would support Intel chips far into the future. (Intels major fail point)

I don't know about you but longevity does mean something to me. I kinda like the idea of just upgrading to a next generation CPU without needing to hock my underwear to pay for a new board, ram, and everything else Intel would require of me. I never liked Intel because of this.
For a little more than 1/2 the price he's talking about, he could have a 2 to 5 year non-obsolescence plan. Not the fastest at this moment but plenty fast with the ability to move forward by just upgrading the CPU in the future.

Until then, he could just settle for a slow and lowely old dog like the $95 dollar FX-4100.......

I am using the FX-4100 OC'd to 4.2 GHZ with an antec 620 liquid cooler. max temp so far is 49 deg C. Using 16 GB RAM (I process images, etc)
