http://bg.battletech.com/?page_id=27
has downloads of the quick start rules for the TT.
The full rules handle armor and heat differently and have more stuff (e.g more weapons, more terrain types, ....)

Imho, the introductory box set (24 mechs, 2 maps, universe guide, quick start rules, dice) and total warfare (the core rulebook) are the best way to get started.

The first one. Four warriors and a point commander makes up a point, just like four (Mech)Warriors and a Star Commander makes up a Star.

The same applies to Protomechs (5 to a point) and vehicles (2 to a point).

A Binary of 'mechs and elementals (5 'mechs and 25 elementals) would have:
-1 Star Captain (Elemental) [Also servers as a Point Commander for his point, as well as a Star Commander for his star]
-4 Point Commanders (Elemental) [One in each of the four remaining points]
-20 Elemental Warriors

-1 Star Commander (Mechwarrior)
-4 Mechwarriors [Each technically their own Point Commander]

You can swap the Star Commander and the Star Captain of course.

Also note that there is such a thing as a 'Nova' which is a star of 'mechs and a star of elementals, but they're treated like a single star. In this case, you only have a Star Commander (called a Nova Commander) and no Star Captain, as it's technically just a single star. It's the same thing though- you'd have 5 'mechs, 25 Elementals and then either upgrade a Mechwarrior or a Point Commander to 'Nova Commander' and he'd be in charge of everyone.
