So Mechwarrior only had jump jets that could push the mech straight up. Then in MW2, they had jump jets that you could use the Page Up, Page Down, Insert, Home, End and Delete keys to vector the thrust. J made the mech jump straight up old-style. The other buttons would make it turn left, turn right, speed up, slow down, or best yet, skid right or skid left, but not change the direction of travel. Skidding was awesome. Someone would fire a salvo of SRMs and you could skid just enough they would pass by your shoulder, but you'd still be aimed at your target. Genius!

Would be viable on scout mechs. Frontline ones can't allow such luxurity as another joint.

Besides that also means you have to have jumpjets both on the back torso and legs to neutralize spin and this is where the weight penalty inevitably comes in.

Oh man... I have such mixed feeling on this... on one had they are so much fun! On the other hand they are so not in line with canon! *sighs* way too much fun...

I loved them, but would be against them.

They were very handy to avoid fire, but I think the old-then-new-school on/off jets would suit the game better.

All good points, but I refuse to believe that engineers sophisticated enough to make a 100 ton fighting machine that can walk and FLY then they could do better than it only going up & down.

You can always accelerate in the desired direction prior to jumping.

Just not the same as the skid or using the spin jets to get shots off at two targets in close succession.

Torso twist. Should be affected by masses of legs and the rest of the mech but smaller ones usually have relatively big legs so let's say you will twist half as fast but it's still enough to time two shots in a *60 sector.

**** ninja black knights headshotting two mechs in a single flight between buildings.
