Well the must read for the the time period is the Warrior trilogy, The Blood of Kerensky trilogy deals with events that will take place over the next 12 months in game so you may want to hold off reading those.
Amazon is selling both trilogies in an omnibus format for around $10, if you have an e-reader, tablet or smart phone you can grab the Amazon app and get it there.

Talk about outclassed...

I know that the game is based on the time of the trilogy, and I hope to get that read before the release, but I felt I needed to start at the basics. Am reading Grey Death Legion's Mercenary Star, and yup, I'm hooked. Fantasy has never been a genre I was interested in, (mostly read mysteries and thrillers, ie. James Patterson), but William H. Keith, Jr. has managed to capture my interest. Have it on my iPod and loving the portability!

Well, if you're into print books, you might be a little hard pressed - Battletech novels have been out of print for decades. For whatever reason, they seem to believe that a Battletech book would never be able to sell in this day and age. Still, you can find many of the Battletech series of books (marked with either Battletech or Mechwarrior - though if you find one with Mechwarrior Dark Age it will be for stuff related to the clix game) at decent used book stores, and if you go to any tabletop gaming convention, you might be able to score some from the garage sales they might have.
There's only two books right now that are still in production, but they're collections of short stories, rather than full-fledged novels. They are the Battletech: Battlecorps Anthology volumes 1 and 2, but I tend to find those are more geared to existing players.
Now, if you've got yourself an e-reader, you're in luck, because www.battlecorps.com, the official Catalyst Game Labs (And by extention, Battletech) fiction site, you can go to their Battleshop and find e-pub versions of many of their old books. Myself, I really liked Decision at Thunder Rift and Wolves on the Border. The Warrior Trilogy is also considered by many to be a mandatory read for any battletech fan, covering much of the goings on during the 4th succession war. If you dig the Clans, I highly suggest the Legend of the Jade Phoenix trilogy, and more appropriate for this MWO's era, the Blood of Kerensky trilogy.
And of course, since the thought of finding it can be daunting for some, I present to you a link

When I followed the link it told me it was no longer available. What did they do, run out of digital ink?

Hmm looks like the only Kindle versions they have are the Dark Age books....maybe something is up with the original stuff....
I went looking through Amazon for the next set of releases for Kindle and had found that the publishers had to pull the CBT novels for some legal reason. The DA novels were not involved in the legal issues. Found this out by shooting a msg to the kind people at BT/Catalyst (http://bg.battletech.com/) and got a quick response from Randall himself! They are planning to re-release the CBT novels that had been previously released to Kindle and continue to release the ones that had not been released once those pesky legal issues are resolved. Hope it's soon!
