So, I found out about MWO this week and I'm thrilled.
My only suggestion is probably too complicated to integrate if it hasn't been accounted for already. I'll voice my two cents for whatever good it might do however.
Back in 1996 I was playig Netmech (multiplayer MW2) on Kali (TCP\IP adapter.) The game was mostly terrible, but ballanced with some weapons regulations and a lot of fun if you "dropped" in team combat; which was back then mostly 2 vs 2 if your host had a nice connection (56k! Yeah!) Myself and some others founded a team called House Jurai, we wore little brackets on our names in Kali chat, [HJ]-, and we joined planet-based strategic combat leagues - think Risk played on the Battletech star map. You could invade planets, fight for for them, or defend against assaults. It all came down to how good your team was - we'd have 12 guys show up in Kali at a per-determined time and commence in HOURS of 2 vs 2 combat until one side retreated or the other side ran out of mechs. It was brilliant fun. Honestly? The best multiplayer gaming of my life - better than anything I've seen before or since, PC, Xbox, you name it. It was some of the best times of adolescence (I was 15 or so back then,) running HJ with a group of people who are still friends to this day, 16 years later. Most of the original players still keep in touch with a Facebook group, since we're from all over the globe.
Now I do NOT expect MWO developers to take the time and energy to create a large, non-Battletech canon, strategic element for MMO play. The players can create those on their own if we all love the game. What I hope, and what I'd like to suggest is an environment players can choose to achieve that experience.
Could select certain environments? Could certain locations\servers\etc be reserved at certain times for two teams to meet and decide the results of a team deathmatch (I was reading, and seen the developers video earlier, talking about team deathmatch being an important part of the game experience.) Can we pick who is on which team? Can we allow "custom" teams for those of us less interested in the Battletech universe? (I've been a Battletech geek since I was 12, however, I like the idea of creating a new & creative organization and the community that grows within.) Can we easily stay "close" to our friends\team? Do we have control of where\when\who we fight with?
I already love what I'm seeing, but I'd love to bring the old HJ back again after 10 years of gaming retirement for a platform that would us flourish in competitive team combat, and allowed for player-developed goal setting formulas.
Maybe I'll get my dream and all of this was integrated into the game long ago - and I'm just the new guy catching up. But if those features are present in MWO.... well, this may well be some of the most fun I've had in on-line gaming since 1996-2000!

OP: Please disregard the previous responses as it is not indicative of the MW:O community at large.
If you haven't already done so please read "New Players Start Here (Pretty Please)" as well as the Announcement and Developer's Blog sections. While it's understandable that that people are bringing their worst fears into these forums they need to understand that we have a very good team of developers working for us, the players in the MW community.
The Dev team are MW enthusiasts, not some random group of people thrown together by a video game corporation. The team knows the MW universe, they are dedicated to continuing it's tradition of "Might Makes Right". They are not some mindless key-punchers that are only following orders from some megalomaniac who is going to force his vision of "what MW should be" on the players. They have intelligence and common sense; We're not going to see Dues ex machina components that allows the team with the biggest wallets to dominate every match.
Also, they are gamers. MW:O is a game programmed by MW:O fans. We'll get features that will make this game fun and enjoyable for the community as a whole, not any that only cater to a select few with large wallets (excluding eye candy like skins, etc).
Lastly, what we'll get at launch is a MVP (minimum viable product). Those features you are asking for may well be included, just not at launch. The players that will be the most satisfied will be those that stick with it for a few months while providing the dev team with thoughtful, informative feedback through these forums. Those that rage quit because "x" was not included at launch will be happily shown the door, and then snickered at when "x" is added in a later patch.
Welcome to our crazy world. Settle in and enjoy the ride.
