This is just my humble opinion, and is not meant as a flame or critique about MWO. I love the Mech Universe as much as anyone else. I'm just as eager to see this game come to fruition--the sooner, the better.

Having said that, I hope that you don't take this rant as raining on your personal parade, but anyone who has done any research on what goes on at GDC and similar conferences will realize that it isn't going to be an MWO coming out parade for the fans, but rather a push by IGC to market their overall FTP ideas and (hopefully) sign more clients to develop more ideas, as well as attend conferences and confabs to learn more about the development cycle of the FTP market.

In addition, I will add (again, just MHO) my take on what is becoming unprofessional: your trolling. You are becoming counterproductive. You are starting to alienate fans. And that is not good.

I hope you read this rant as a constructive criticism, and I remain a dedicated hopeful.

Sincerely,
=H=

Very well written constructive criticism, thank you.
I'll respectfully disagree here though.
I think the trolling is great.
Nobody is *really* harmed from it, and nobody is *really* going to start a pitch fork weilding mob. it's all in good fun, we are all kidding. Do not take it literally.
I love it personally.

no one is harmed from the trolling its kinda fun but sometimes it kinda makes you feel as if they are tricking you about certain things and they may be tricking us about the jenner hunchback resembling the archer in the atlas trailer

Yesterday was rough. Today I had to buy a new game just to try to distract myself. (it didn't work btw) At the rate thing's are going, I don't know if my mind will last till MWO gets released. :)

About the dev team here. (and Paul specifically) It's hard to say nice things about developers without people thinking you're either a brown-noser or a sycophant, but I like the down-to-earth atmosphere here.

The only other time I've seen so much of the devs for a game was when I was into a fan-made Persistant world Server for Neverwinter nights. The fact that we get to see real people and real personalities from the devs is way more interesting that the sterile "We love everything about our players and we're unfortunate we couldn't find a way to make things work for you." Plus everything I've seen the dev team do has been all in good fun. My advice is for everyone to just pull the proverbial stick out and just enjoy being on a forum with fellow Mechwarrior fanatics.

Real people > PR bull where developers are to scared to say anything that hasn't been steam cleaned and stripped of any character.

So where do you draw the line? Why can moderators troll but users not? I don't like double standards.

Anyway, back to GDC - there a heaps of photos goin up over the web. IGN is pretty good. Also http://www.flickr.co...ith/6813630030/

Yet to see any MWO as yet...

LOL I think you are about 12+ hours behind there, big guy. MechSpecs has had a GDC tracker / Dev tracker thread going since about 0800 Eastern time.

Just sayin :)

I'm certainly not advocating taking away whatever fun the devs are having with you...

Don't get me wrong, by all means, this is their website, and they can do whatever they want with it.

The fun's worn thin already for me--maybe I'm just not as easily amused.

I'm ready for substance, and will be glad to see it if and when it happens.

Just not counting any eggs here. <shrug>
=H=

I take PGI and Paul's trolling anyday anytime over 24/7 scripted PR talk that most other devs do on their forums and make you feel that the game is being made by unfeeling robots in suits.

Not that PGI didn't do PR talk themselves but the trolling is a nice touch. It makes the interaction more natural. Reminds us (and THEM, especially) that they are gamers, like us.

Remember that the project starter early october, late september at best. Most other games actually had 3-4 years of development, some had more even, before they even actually announce that they are working on that title. The fact that PGI have a playable version is already quite remarkable. And they seem to be promising gameplay videos in less than 24 hours, or at least this week. So I dunno where's the basis for complaints of "no substance", if you allow yourself to step back and look at the overall picture and compare it to industry standards.

Secondly, remember that this is a game. Free, too. For all the hype that I'm feeling, I'm more than prepared to accept that the game might be a **** and a stinker. If i end up being terribly disappointed over that, the only one to be blame is myself. There are more important things for me to care about in RL than just MWO, which is really a non-essential part of my life. I'll just move on, there are so many games to look forward to anyways.

That said, I'm just enjoying the atmosphere and the ride until launch day. Just take it easy.

Just because Paul likes to troll for fun doesn't mean he trolls all the all the time!

I'm ok with the trolling. At least he's enjoying himself. Lord knows big projects, even ones you really want to see through, end up dragging on you pretty bad by the end. I get the impression that if the dev work was just becoming a slog, he wouldn't be trolling at all - and you always get the best product when the creator has high spirits throughout.

So troll away Paul, troll away.

I expect to load the video, hit play, and flaming chariots driven on Bigfoot monster trucks will burst forth from my screen with Victor Steiner Davion at the helm shredding on a quad necked keytar shooting ER Large Lasers from his eyeballs.

Those are reasonable expectations, right?

Unfortunately this is true. This is the situation MWO is in. PGI has been very good at consistently releasing information every month. Its kept the fans engaged and eager. However, no information that you can really sink your teeth into has been released. And its allowed a hoard of people to form who are just looking for an excuse to not like MWO and hate on it. A ho-hum showing at GDC will not be good and will give the haters a free pass to run rampant. I already see it brewing in other Mech related communities. PGI, you really need to shock and awe us at GDC.
