After seeing this sweet pic:

I have to ask:

"Do rear mounted weapons exist in MWO?" (The two CT mounted Med Lasers used to face to the rear)

you can probably assume No.

Centurion and Dragon concepts also show all weapons forward-facing

I don't recall if the devs have said anything about it, but I think the general consensus is that rear weapons would be an interesting thing to have, but functionally, as we don't have the 360-in-160 view that a real 'MechWarrior would have, rear targeting would be a bit of a pain. Better to have those weapons cycled to the front so they can get some real use.

The point is, Atlas shown in "hot-drop" trailer with great possibility have 2 rear mounted Medium Lasers. Like that model has in canon.

If they were to implement rear firing weapons, I would immediately acquire every 'Mech I could with rear mounted weapons. First and foremost would be the Wolfhound.

If they allow rear-mounted weapons, I would build a RetreatMech.

Mount all the weapons on the torso as rear-facing, completely reverse the torso armor so that the rear torso is the strongest while the front torso is paper-thin, flip arms once I enter battle, then back into a fight while aiming exclusively to the rear.

Then when the fighting gets too tough, I just switch to forward gear and get the hell out of Dodge.

Perhaps a good solve would be to make rear mounted weapons like AMS systems. They autofire when a target (if acquired) gets in range. Since those rear mounted weapon slots are small, you wouldn't have massive game changing weapons placed there, BUT it might give some balance for slow turning Assaults VS sneaky Lights.

Given that we appear to be working with a distinct sensor "cone" which acts forward of our 'mechs, I suspect rear-firing weapons wouldn't work with the overall interface and control set-up.
