I've read dev mentions about third person camera like "We're exploring ways to have a third person camera that make sense from a gameplay point of view." But in my opinion devs don't take third person camera serious enough. IMO game would lose at least half of it's entertainment with first person camera only. Even more, this is MMO and when player logs in the game and start piloting his Catapult he should be like "OMFG MY MECH IS SO COOL!!!!" but it's not possible if he can't see it. Can't see how mech is rocking while it's moving etc. Third person view is even cool in commercial sense, game is F2P and devs could sell some eye candies so players can mod visual of their mechs or something. It's a fact players get more addicted to the game if they are addicted to their characters, in visual sense too.
Personally I played Mechwarrior games in third person view only and I would lose half of my interest if that's not possible in MWO.
Thanks for attention

I feel like in a commercial sense to broaden the root of player it would make sense.
But i feel a simulation would in the end be more appealing. To play the game as if you were actually in the mech.
Thats what mechwarrior has been about since the beginning. I think that the game would actually move backwards if it was first person exclusive.
There was a mechwarrior-ish game called Mech Assault for the original xbox. and i have to say it kept the lore that mechwarrior and battletech thrive on, but all in all it just didnt feel right. It felt like playing socom in a machine.
Although it is not a bad idea at all. Im just not sure if itd fit right.
However its just my opinion. Nothing more.
I will add though that in the original MechWarrior games there were third person views available. So i would put money on them adding a 3rd person view.

AS the previous thread said - the tactical advantages are so great that no one would use first person. Thats why it won't be in until they can get a view that doesn't give those advantages.

Also, 3rd person would make you unable to see the various secondary cockpit displays.
Id prefer pure cockpit view only- its just so much more immersive and realistic.

In my opinion all the problems about tactical advantage are solved by just giving players an ability to choose

I agree. the advantages that 3rd person would give in scale of view points would be absolutely great.
but the first person view would/should give you everything you need to know. In perspective, while 3rd person would have an advantage due to scale of visiblitly, first person should have the overall advantage of having every sensor, monitor, everything that will tell you everything about what is happening to/with your mech and your surrounding areas.
with a realistic approach, does a fighter pilot have a 3rd person view? he has everything he needs in his cockpit.
i think there should be a balance of advantages between the views, but a 3rd person view is a must (to stick to the roots and broaden the available players)
i think all it comes down to is where the roots lay. mw1 and up had it. why shouldnt mwo? what do you think?

I think this is an ideal *cosmetic* function which could be in the cash shop (and very difficult to get via normal gameplay). Since they probably won't release with AI opponents I'd hope you can jump in a map alone, just to explore. Any PvP experience can be rough if you’re thrown in the game and spend half of the time looking at the map and the IU while the rest of the group keeps screaming “noob” and votes to kick you out. During that map/UI tutorial 3rd person view for screenshots should be available. As to the actual fights, I’m afraid you'd need either replays or spectator mode to allow 3rd person view without the advantages in combat.

I don't think 3rd person view is neccesary in game at all- it exists only to give people gameplay advantages, it doesn't add anything to immersion or fun and messes with balance

Personally, if they do put in 3rd Person mode (and I hope they don't), then for the love of a drunk monkey at least take away the targeting reticule. I understand there are people who go "OMG 3rD prsn! It iz l33t HaX0rZ AdVntGe. Muzt Havs." And let's face it... 3rd person did give you an advantage in the previous games. So maybe if they put in 3rd person, they could take away the HUD and targeting reticule... you know, since you don't want to look out of the cockpit, why should you get to see the same things those who do get to?

No problem with 3rd person (though I would never play it) as long as in 3rd person u cannot see ANY of your cockpit systems, if your standing on your mechs head how are you going to look at its cockpit displays, no info on waypoints, damage (enemy or your own mech) heat, NOTHING. Mechwarrior is a simulator, if u want to play 3rd person go play armored core
