I just built a new 2600k SB system that I ended up selling to a friend when his system crapped out. I now find myself just a few weeks away from the launch of Ivy Bridge and am wondering if I should wait or build with Sandy Bridge now.

If I build now should I go for the LGA 1155 2600k or spend the little extra and go for the LGA 2011 3930k? Which socket will last longer? If the 2600k is the chip and socket of choice should I use the the Asus Sabertooth P67 or wait for the new Sabertooth Z77?

Thoughts?

Okay this depends on a few factors. First of all, if it's for gaming, an i5 2500k is a much better deal. Second, you'll only see 10% higher performance on Ivy Bridge, and that i5 will go down in price when said new architecture comes out. Third, LGA 1155 unless you have no limit to your budget or are running a server. And if you really want that 8 threads, then still wait for ivy bridge to come out and buy when the price drops is your best bet.

So is my opinion.

not bad for a AMD fanboy, lol

I agree with Vulpes, for a gaming rig, socket 2011 is overkill. The i5 2500k is all the CPU needed for today's games, and I own a OC'ed 2600k. Ivy Bridge won't change that.

Now the question is wait for the new Sabertooth Z77 or find the courrent P67?

I had to delete suggesting a AM3+ board five times. But if you have the budget for an 2011 board, none of my recommendations would matter... so yeah.
Anyhow, i5, get Radeon HD 79xx series gpu/equivilant kepler if you can. If gaming of course.

and eh, if you can wait, get the z77.

If you have an AMD suggestion please make it. I have used AMD before, but Intel seems to have the best deal right now. I will go for the 2500k and wait for the Z77. Maybe you can make me see the AMD light.

Well, in heavy multithread AMD competes. In gaming, the $109 fx-4100 is enough for most any game out there today, however Piledriver will be coming out in q3/4 of this year, with 15% higher IPC an 10-20% higher clocks, as such it is a decent idea should you plan to upgrade your cpu in the future anyhow.
Also, AM3+ motherboards have the ability to run more hdd/ssd in RAID than the integrated intel controller, and you have 4 way x-fire/sli support on the 990fx chipset, 2 way on the 970 chipset.
you also get a faster dual-channel RAM controller.
But CPU power will be less unless you overclock to equal performance of a stock i5-2500k . sadly you won't overclock better unless your running liquid nitrogen or some other exceptionally extreme cooling solution.
You'll also save about $100 on the initial CPU (if you buy the 4100 before waiting to upgrade when pD comes out) and $50 on the motherboard with AMD.

I think I will stick with Intel for this build V. The 2500k mated with the Z77 and a 7950 or 7970 should keep me smiling for a while to come. Throw in a Corsair h100 WC and a little OC'ing and I am set.

Vulp you seem to be a very knowledgeable system builder. Any advice for WC? I am going to start with a closed system, but I would like to later on this year maybe do a custom cpu and gpu WC setup.

Quite honestly I've never touched custom WC sadly. Sorry. I've never had the budget or built for the budget LC would even be asked for.
Mostly been doing things for friends, family, and lower-income families, and a position repairing computers. I don't really get to touch the nice stuff.
I wish I did. But college comes first.

I completely understand college coming first as I am just finishing up my grad degree and going back for another undergrad. I am just lucky that I have avoided the pit falls that many of my friends have fallen into (Children being chief among them). This gives me a little extra bit of cash to throw at my hobbie.

Not to say that the money could not be better spent elsewhere, but using it on my PC keeps me out of trouble!

Personally Vernius, I would put more money into a good case with superior airflow then the water cooling route. But then again, I'm not entirely sure what level of overclocking you wish to achieve. However, I will state that the Ivy Bridge chip that was tested by Anandtech, the i7 3770K that will be releasing soon enough (and should price for $332 give or take) has some very impressive power consumption at load and due to it's 22nm nature, it should be capable of some extreme overclocking with more manageable temps. http://www.anandtech...ore-i7-3770k/10. Also, depending on the game, it either has about an extra 8-10% performance increase over the 2500k or no performance increase whatsoever. Anandtech's game testing with a discrete graphics card is very limited in this particular article. Their primary focus is of the Intel HD 4000 integrated graphics (Which AMD has the upper hand in that department! Which is good, competition, etcetc). Anyway.

It's...hard to say where to go at this time. You could spend the extra $100 on the Ivy Bridge for some potential gains. I'll be more interested in seeing overclocking of the chips to see the 'real' performance benefits of the die shrink.

Going to use Corsair Obsidian 800D case with the Corsair H100 WC. I really want my cpu to run under 60c while under full load.
