Digital Trends and IGN's MWO and Demo preview reports offer conflicting views on beta. Digital Trends report supports the notion which I had felt would be how it might pan out. The launch of the game this summer actually being an open beta phase.

IGN however offer a different view which seems to very much conflict with not only Digital Trends report, but much of the noise that was coming from the developers. They suggest a closed beta period that would be forthcoming soon, with a public beta leading into the autumn or winter. Speculations abound, however, the reporters have obviously had face to face time with the developers at GDC. The reports seem to conflict, so I wonder who is right and who is wrong?

IGN thinks this is a multi-platform title. He*k, they could even say those mechs are firing AK-47s. B)

Don't read them, don't believe them and most of all, don't support them. ;)

I my opinion, there is no conflict. At this point of time, a Open Beta equals Release for pretty much any F2P based game: famous (or infamous) 1.0 in game version became only that, a series of numbers in game .exe.

Somewhere in the middle.. a Close beta stress test, followed by an Open Beta in summer to a Autumn Release.

Bet IGN got better info than DT.. DT got the old "We will release as a Open Beta in the summer", and IGN got the Closed Beta imminent tip.. ;)

They are all wrong until PGI proves them right.

During last nights NGNG live taping Daeron (who is at GDC right now) talked really briefly about the Alpha/Beta from what he was told directly from the PGI guys.

Keep an eye and ear out for the latest episode.

That's not in dispute here. What is in dispute is the fact IGN are saying there will be a closed beta, with an open beta to launch at the end of the year. This is goes in the face of what the other article is saying. Someone, my money is on IGN, has made a reporting error. But... who knows!? ;-)

well they are doing in house testing, which is in effect a blosed beta. not all closed betas are public, for the most part devs do their own inhouse testing and small closed betas to weed out the lions share of the bugs and deal with most balance issues before going to a larger closed beta which could be public or not to test server loads. an open beta is as somebody already mentioned effectively a release for f2p mmos.

as for who is right and who is wrong, nobody can really say. in my experience its always best to go with the more conservative estimate, especially when devs say a large gap of time (winter, fall, spring, summer, Q1,Q2...etc..0), because things pop up, issues arrise, feature creep and what not. all we can really do is be patient and look at all the pretty pictures ;)

June is a long way off, but it allows me to save up for the stuff I need.

bigger monitor for two monitor setup
joystick with bells and whistles
thruster
foot pedals
IRTracker
New Headset with better sound and mic for teamwork

so expect to spend a bit of cash for all of this, since I will be building a cockpit for this game

IGN called the Atlas a "Titan". I'm sure PGI is thrilled with that.

Don't pay any attention to them.

I wouldn't read too much into it. It likely comes down to how it was phrased in each different demo. However if They are really releasing in summer (not open beta summer) I'd expect the closed beta testing to begin in not too long. If August is the goal, I'd put open beta around June. That's if its a real beta and not a glorified preview.

I have to read that preview. B)

"Iconic heavy mechs like the Titan are immediately recognizable..." <_<

"Ultimately the goal of a fight is to kill the other team (called a mercenary group)"

Noone can be that dumb, he must've been high when writing it. ;)

or the IGN writer was the zynga games specialist that just happened to be near the mechwarrior demo and they asked him to handle it. Hey he probably thought mech was a new farmville game.

ya - 'open beta' = Launched for a F2P mmo. Hell one could argue a game like WoW is STILL in open beta given how often they still patch and tweak balance ;)

Open beta's nowadays are mostly just about stress testing hardware and getting enough eyeballs into the game to boost word of mouth through viral means.

What's more interesting is closed beta details

Well the video interview with Russ at gamestrailers sorts this out. IGN misreported the facts. Open Beta this summer!

Actually, that wouldn't be pretty bad, growing little Atlases in my garden, with packs of Jenners grazing in the fields.

On a more serious note, it would be nice if MWO would reach the same level of popularity as Farmville. (Impossible, considering the target audience of each game.)
