Hey guys. I'm a long time video game fan since Mechwarrior 2: 31st Century Combat. However I was rather unaware of the Battletech as a whole. I knew nothing of the board game, the stories and the universe of Battletech as a whole until High School. So I'm asking you guys for suggestions .

What novels/stories are good reads?

Are there other books that just explain aspects of Battletech Universe like source books or something?

Lastly, I'm not sure about the board game Classic Battletech, so would I like it as additional source materiel or is just strictly for playing the board game?

So those are my questions. So let me know if you think I would like this or like that and if you want point out something to avoid, that is fine as well. Any questions let me know.

See this thread for the novels

By chonological
http://www.stargazer..._novel_list.htm

By importance and general timeline
Then just read all the books by Stackpole and the latter novels by Loren Coleman.
Start with
Warrior Trilogy - start and end of the 4th Succession war culminating in the formation of the Federated Commonwealth
Blood of Kerensky Trilogy - Clan invasion of the Inner Sphere
Natural Selection / Assumption of Risk / Bred for War / Malicious Intent - seeds for the Fedcom Civil war and future Clan conflicts (between Clans and against the Innersphere)
Twilight of the Clan Series - the annihilation of Clan Smoke Jaguar (here again the most important novels are the two by Stackpole)
Capellan Solution (Two books) - civil war bringing back the St. Ives Compact back into the Cappellan Confederation
Illusions of Victory / Flashpoint / Patriots and Tyrants / Storms of Fate / End Game - the Fedcom Civil War

In regards to good reads; i like the novels by Blaine Lee Pardoe.

As for sourcebooks... i'll have to find them somewhere... but the TRO (technical readouts) source books are a good place to start.

Anything written by Stackpole is a must read. He got to play with all the major storylines before having his fall out with FASA, and was one of the best writers for classic battletech full stop. Always found the Natural Selection series rather dull in comparison.

As for Source Books? http://bg.battletech.com/?page_id=481 It's worth checking out the rule books to get a rough idea of what the game is based around, as well as providing hours of ranting about how certain weapons are over powered/ under powered, and question the developers ability to get things right.
