They have to at some point implement it. It was a huge part of the tabletop game. If you were up against an assault you NEVER got within 2 hexes of it unless it was its back. Otherwise he comes up and kicks you in the leg. An atlas kick in TT was 20 damage. That a HUGE part of the game they would be leaving out. A punch was 1 pt of damage for every 10 tons. The difference is a punch you had to have a hand actuator and couldnt fire any weaponry on that arm.

A lot of people in this thread seem unaware that the battletech universe in which mechwarrior takes place regularly has mechs making 'hand-to-hand' attacks including punching, kicking, pushing, charging, as well as 'melee' weapons like hatchets and swords. Such attacks appear regularly in the fiction as well as the board game that started everything. Spears, flails, and a few others that were mentioned in this thread however were not.

My suspicion is IF they implement it, they will only add hatchets and give melee weapons their own hardpoint type, and only give it to select mechs that have melee animations made for it, like the hatchetman, axeman etc. . . But I am sure they are not even going to start looking into it until they have the clan stuff all sorted out.

A lot of mechs already have the melee hardpoint type. It's called a hand.
It'd give some nice uses to those otherwise useless limbs (apart from ammo and sinks) that we sometimes have with us.

I wouldn't think that melee would break the game but I do not think it would be needed. Maybe much later but even then I don't think it would happen that often.

Melee, yes I think so.

I could see the addition of an "action" key. I grew up playing the old table top, which had plenty of rules for an atlas picking up another mechs limb and finishing the job. I'd plan for some articulation delay, not the fast action knifing effect but a rather cumbersome line up and swing action, requiring a lot of skill to land a good blow.

Theres a lot of mechs with totally usesless hands, I'd be thrilled to see them put to use.

Why do we need melee weapons? My Cat has two legs, my Atlas has two fists, and both are very large. All we need is punching and kicking. Although, a Hatchetman would be nice.

Yeah, in many moments you´d be right. But think about it! A hatchet! ;)
And i´d be thinking about a very slow swing of the axe. Would make it very hard to hit with a Axe, but it would be somewhat balanced out.

In second thought, I change my opinion. Yes implement melee weapons, so i can sit there shooting all the idiots that are trying to swing an axe at me, which has used up valuable tonnage. And kick over those pesky scouts always at my feet

I hope to see you when they implement melee. Cant wait to see all those wannabe bad boys with long range weapons to get their heads cut off. Wash your neck, man.

I assume youre an Assault Pilot? Dang, thats no fun at all. Way to easy to hit, way to slow to get me.
