As a devoted fan of Battletech and a reader of the novels and a fan of the universe in general, I had mixed feelings when I heard this game was F2P. Eventually, I decided that it actually made sense for the universe in a certain perspective, which I will outline.
Battletech, to a degree is about nobility. The Great Houses are mostly collections of feudal lords, and those born into money or prestige do have a monetary advantage over most of the poor in society. Now, I'm not suggesting that people who don't pay money should be 'poor', the 'dregs', getting dragged around in the mud as the shiny nobles stomp over them for teh lewts and XP and salvage.
But if some rich guy were to use his inheritance in the actual universe, what could be buy? He could buy the widely available technology, he could have, in short, more variety.
What couldn't this privileged person buy? Things that are priceless in the Battletech universe:
Lostech.
Clantech.
Rare Mech designs utilizing this technology or perhaps other rare designs.
To me, F2P is a double edged sword. I think that if F2P allows people to paintjob their mech, buy equipment/mechs that are pretty common in the universe if you have the money for it, it won't hurt the immersion of the game, because to a degree, the Battletech universe really *is* like that.
However, if they start selling Lostech, Clantech, or other such 'priceless' items for cash, we can probably say goodbye to competitive balance. Either that or we have to start redefining what Battletech is in order to conform to a different pay system, which people may find uncomfortable.
