Without doubt Cyclops.

In case of a non-assault tonnage ...
Loki / Hellbringer for heavy
MenShen for medium
Raven for light.

Every Mech should be available for Commander role (via an Modul) but will have maybe some weight restrictions to make him depend on his lancemates for deffense and guard duty. So naturally there would be some Mechs who have maybe some advantages to make them Commander, maybe because they already have higher weight capacity or maybe a wide sensor/communication range, or because they have build in Bonii

So or so, a Commander module would make it harder for the enemy to easily identify certain mechs who could be commander, to cripple the enemies coordination or support.

I would say, something that fulfills most of the following criteria:
  • Relatively fast in order to re-position as needed
  • Equipped with sensor boosting equipment such as a Beagle Active Probe
  • Has some measure of stealth capabilities, via either a small physical cross section or an ECM
  • Durable enough to survive if it is caught with its pants down
  • Lethal enough independently to handle an unsupported probe by an enemy force

It is why I cannot wait for the Hellbringer. Can you say 'custom tailored command mech,' people? Hell, it was even used as such in the Battletech Fluff on occasion! A Raven is also a pretty good choice, though it suffers quite a bit in the last two criteria.

Afaik the Battlemaster is designed that way, also of course the Cyclops.

In this game I'd be partial to the Dragon for a command mech. It's mostly longer ranged weapons, solid armor, and great speed. Perfect fit for the mobile commander who wants to call down air strikes from the front.

You just compared your choices between a light and assault mech, it depends on your role, if your lance is all lightly armored for example, choose a light/medium mech. If your lance is medium, choose a medium/heavy, heavy = heavy, assault, and assault means you go better assault mech. The idea is to give yourself better equipment because your team mates need you to issue orders, but also be able to fight effectively.

Choice of a command mech will depend in part on the role of the commander. I can't see a commader of a light lance in anything much larger than fast medium. The reverse is true for a heavy /assault . Keep in mind that each lance will have a commander whose mission will require different types/classes of mechs. The company commander will, most likely, not be the person running the scout/light lance due to the nature of the scout assignment. A medium lance will be focused on flanking and patrolling making it an unlikely place for the company commander. Assault mechs are really too slow for good battlefield mobility. That leaves the Heavy class or a mech that is not usually engaged in "in your face" combat, ie fire support, combat reserve etc. I would be surprised if most company don't end up in a heavy when all is said and done.

Thanks for all of the feed back. I am thinking a Catapult will be fit the style of Company Commander I would prefer, but its true the Command 'mech should vary a great deal depending on if it is leading a lance or company.

Why? Because every time they die you have a communication breakdown, unless your team is well disciplined and a someone was selected as XO and they are confident in picking up the duty immediately.

Personally I'd say anything with heavy armor and long range, like the Catapult. Not only does it give the Commander a better chance at surviving, a longer range mech will typically set up somewhere that gives it a good view of the battlefield.

surely he get the one with the biggest leather chair?

Honest tho it would depend on what the drop was for. Generally speaking the navy works this way - the more experienced an officer the bigger his boat is. The reason for this is that it keeps your 'experience' safe and he has the talent to turn what would be a large target into something quite lethal. It's also his job to take it for the team when a fighting retreat is called for - having a massive damage soak helps.

A real Commander chooses the most humble options.

The UrbanMech is the clear mech to use. Just hide in any given hole and never emerge. If an enemy trips over your chrome dome, you pop some AC/10 rounds into their *** and continue hiding.

Ah yes, the Men Shen, the Raven on steroids. Accurate long range support via LRM 15, a decent amount of armor, enough med pulse lasers to crisp a wandering enemy scout, and the speed to get out of dodge when said scouts allies inevitably decide to kill you :D
