You want an RPG, not a MechWarrior game.
That's fine. I'd love one too, because Crescent Hawks Inception (the first BattleTech CRPG) was extremely neat and set the ground work for showing how a BattleTech RPG could be pretty awesome. Yes, you could even run around on foot if you wanted.
That said, that's not MWO at all nor should it be. It's another game genre entirely and it's something that would, in fact, be cool to see down the line. While MWO is an MMO, it is not an MMORPG. It's an MMOSIM; kind of like Planetside is an MMOFPS. MMOs, while traditionally RPGs, are not locked into it.
Anyway, yeah, if you're not here for what amounts to MechWarrior 5 you might have stumbled into the wrong game, but hopefully you'll give it a shot anyway.

You are playing a MechWarrior.
MechWarriors pilot BattleMechs.
They do not partake in infantry battles.
They do not fly Aerospace fighters.
They do not wear BattleArmor (Elementals for you clanners).
Please please PLEASE stop the complaining and crying for "We want table top on-line!!". This is MechWarrior.
Having a massive scale like the table top where you could choose to be an aerofighter, elemental, infantry for whichever house/clan/merc you wanted would be great, but would also be a MASSIVE undertaking.
MWLL did do a good job of integrating Aerospace and stuff, but I was never crazy about how Battle Armor popped out of 'mechs. It was a black mark that I preferred playing 1-life battles without worrying about.
That said, again, what he's talking about is more of a BattleTech RPG, than a MechWarrior game (confusing since MechWarrior was the title of the RPG for BattleTech in the P&P world). These things aren't actually out of line in that environment; in CSI, you'd want to visit towns and starports and such, and in those instances you'd get into fights
without your 'mech and have to defend yourself with personal weapons and armor - the same goes for allies of yours that might be lacking 'mechs or simply aren't MechWarriors.
So yeah, there's room and a reason for a MechWarrior to be shooting at someone with a rifle, but it's not important to this kind of game. That said, letting players climb out of their 'mechs with a pistol (completely a non-threat except to other pilots) would be amusing, if pointless and likely not worth adding. It's funny in the board game.
EDIT: I would not be opposed to MWO releasing an expansion down the line that incorporates aerospace, VTOLs, tanks, or Battle Armor in either a PC or NPC fashion. I'm quite in favor of combined arms, but obviously the biggest draw and first priority should doubtlessly be the 'mechs.
