Anyway, I'd have to go with High Guard Battle March. With less techno and more battle drums, I think it would fit the Battletech "gritty future" militaristic theme.

Being the biggest thing with two legs on the battlefield does not mean you go without challenge.

I would say they are epic orchestral and tribal music. Have a listen to umber wall or iron piston.

Yeah, I am going to have to disagree heavily.
Because looking through my list, I count 7 out of the 21 tracks for Mechwarrior 2 Mercs that have heavy metal-esque tracks. The rest are more environmental/atmospheric tracks like Dust River, Gotterdamerung, Crystal Storm, and Tick Tock. And I was being generous on the tracks that might be considering "rock out" tracks, with Dragon's Teeth having a rather extensive part (more than half of the track length) being devoted to a slower piece with lots of non-traditional sounds in it. So many of the Mercs tracks are still extremely environmental pieces:
Even tracks with heavy use of distorted guitars aren't "rocking out", instead opting to use them as heavy set background noise. The guitars in this one are an excellent example. The name "Dust River" is completely fitting, as it reminds me of a desert.
Edit: and if you were talking about Mechwarrior 2 (no mercs or GBL), then you're definitely wrong, since there isn't a guitar to be heard in that soundtrack.

Trooper by Iron Maiden
Battle Metal by Turisas
so many other metal songs it seems pointless to name them all, metal and metal robots a natural fit

...but I *DO* have to say that I'm liking the rock that was heard in the 'teaser' trailer - if that's the musical preference of PGI, I'm not gonna lose any sleep over it.

In that case, I'd like to see some environmental pieces like this:
I'd love to have something like that set the mood as I look over the map of the Inner Sphere, the stars twinkling in the background.
