I've been corrected by my fellow pilots....

This is a game of Internet Stompy Roberts!

My mistake, sorry for the confusion.

Its not in the *pursuit* of knowledge & truth, its arguing about what to call something that already has a name.

Why bicker about what to call something when it clearly has a name. People are going to call it whatever they want anyway, so why go questioning them? I'm posting on it because like you I happen to be able to post my opinion anywhere on the forums.

more to the question is why are *you* posting incomplete & misspelled words when trying to be snarky with someone.

actually, it is the pursuit of knowlege. I want to understand what other ppl think and feel about the subject. I was not hoping for arguments, but expecting a discussion about other points of view.

Giant Robots, Megas XLR (I'm sure Kiva and the Glorft would call them something else, but who cares? XD)

personally there are way to many incongruities in just about -any- language to really get into a heated debate over whether one word shouldn't be used over another word that is commonly accepted in both cases, it's fun to debate, but getting upset over terminology is like getting mad at the guy who cut off someone four cars ahead of you, sure he's an *****, but chances are pretty good it isn't going to significantly influence your day and there's an even greater chance there's nothing you could do about it anyway ^.^

Speaking of google and weird things they invest in... GOOGLE BUILD A MECH! Lets get this party started for real people! I kid... or do I? :-)

Actually thinking about this now I could really used a Construction Mech, the Machines I operate at work are somewhat dated in their workloads and daily limitations.. A mech with more practical flexablitiy, would be nice to see and use.

To answer the main thread, terms drift, and often get applied to things that don't work when considering their eymology.

Guymelef ---- Escaflowne

I would say the mechs in Escaflowne are called "Melefs." The Guymelefs are the larger ones (the ones that dominate the show) but there are the small melefs that just get roflstomped. I think "Guy" means big or great or something in Gaia's language.

Mechwarriors are not robots, they do not work, they are vehicles just like tanks, or helicopters,.... you don't call an airplane a robot.

However if mechwarriors would have their own AI, or were remotely controlled, then they could be called robots.

... did you just confuse "Mechwarriors" for "Battlemechs?"

Mechwarriors are the pilots, not the machines.

Apparently, it is an issue of scale and function:
  • Guymelef - "Giant armored power suit in the 8-costa or 8-meter class that were initially built to fight dragons. Except for the recent Guymelefs in the Zaibach Empire's revived production line, most of them required several decades to over a century to build."
  • Melef - "Armored power suit, mainly those in the 4-costa or 4-meter class."
Though, the "Bulldozer Melef" (episode 8) doesn't seem that small by comparison to the Escaflowne itself.

It seems the difference is analogous to that between Strider and Gear (Heavy Gear), and/or that between BattleMechs and IndustrialMechs.

The question is, which came first - was the tech for Guymelefs scaled down and simplified to create lower-grade "mundane" Melefs, or were the Melefs scaled up and rearmed to create the (originally anti-dragon) Guymelefs?

Because they look like giant robots.

And re:the rest of the discussion, if they aren't robots, 'Robot wars' is a poorly named show

Mech(anoid)s in the context of MW:O are the farthest you can get from being labelled robots. Robots are designed to follow preprogrammed actions and unmanned. They don't even need to have arms or legs. Mechs in here are manned bipedal units which cannot function without a pilot. They are combat vehicles, nothing more, nothing less. Mechanical humanoids I would think.

And as for robot wars, well that was a poor title choice I agree. They are just remote controlled buggies with saws and pointy bits. If they produced one that went out and implemented its own attack on the opponent, then that would indeed be a robot. A good example of a robot would be one of these new automatic lawnmowers that buzz round the lawn on thier own - A preprogrammed unmanned unit doing a set task. Asimov or whatever the honda showcase is called- that's a robot.

To call them walking tanks is maybe a relative comparison, but in all fairness, my Atlas would love a pair to use as rollerskates - painted in founders decals of course - to match the socks ;)

Now, this is a drone, and a lot closer to being a robot than a mech. One could even convince me that it was a robot probably, with a well reasoned argument.

Isn't that basically what the remote controlled "fighting robots" in "robot wars" are?
