Since we all know that the Hero mech is probably going to be one of the mechs already in game I'm going to list all 'special' mechs from the Sarna just so we know what it could be. Striked-thorough the weapon/timeline incompatible ones. Try not to all vote for the Jen-Lo-Wang although we all know it's going to be it (and it's going to suck a bit without melee)

LIGHT

COM-7S2 Commando Freyr - The personal 'Mech of ex-Arcturan Guards member turned treacherous Hunter's Paradise guide Zvi Freyr, his Commando has been extensively modified with both Clan and experimental technologies. Retaining only the Endo Steel chassis and CASE of his formerly stock COM-5S model, Freyr has replaced the standard weapons with lighter Clan-tech systems - two Streak SRM-4 launchers in its right arm with a single ton of reloads for the Streak Missile Launchers in the CASE protected right torso, and a pair of ER Medium Lasers mounted in the left arm. The use of a Small Cockpit and a salvaged Clan extra-light engine save enough weight to switch to double strength heat sinks, as well as carry six jump jets and seven tons of Hardened Armor.

JR7-K Jenner Grace - Known as "Cat" among the MechWarriors of Sorenson's Sabres, the personal 'Mech of Grace Shiro has been extensively modified over the years to aid her role as the unit's spotter. Originally trading two Medium Lasers for extra armor, in the lead-up to War of 3039 her 'Mech was outfitted a less-refined experimental Endo-Steel chassis and Ferro-Fibrous armor, allowing the SRM launcher to be replaced with an advanced Octagon Missile Magnet Narc Missile Beacon with three tons of Homing Pods.

JR7-K Jenner Grace II - Refitted prior to the *****, the prototype chassis and armor of Grace's Jenner were swapped for now refined production grade components. While retaining the Narc Beacon, dropping its ammo to a single ton along with the removal of her 'Mechs jump jets allowed it to replace the two medium lasers with a pair of Light PPCs and add a C3 Slave Unit to enhance her spotter role.

JR7-K Jenner Samuli - A customized Jenner for MechWarrior Samuli Rinne, which is in the service of House Kurita. The 'Mech's engine was upgraded with a 245 rated XL Engine and 3.5 tons of Ferro-Fibrous Armor. By removing the standard SRM launcher, DCMS techs freed enough room to add CASE and a single LRM-15 with two tons of ammunition. Rinne's Jenner keeps the standard complement of Medium Lasers.

MEDIUM

Yen-Lo-Wang was a famous ArenaMech in the Solaris Games. Originally a CN9-A that underwent a series of modifications to a variety of customized configurations over time, it was occasionally reported as the "CN9-YLW" but this is explicitly[19] not considered to be a proper variant. The CN9-YLW designation is associated with one particular modification that drops the LRM to upgrade the autocannon to an Autocannon/20 with three tons of ammunition and add a Hatchet to the left arm.

HBK-4G Hunchback Shakir - The personal 'Mech of Sorenson’s Sabres member and future ISF director Shakir Jerrar was refitted to an advanced variation of the 4H in the lead-up to the War of 3039, carrying two prototype Medium Pulse Laser in place of the four standard Medium Lasers.

HBK-4G Hunchback Hohiro - Assigned Jerrar's 'Mech after his retirement from the Sabres, when piloted by Hohiro Utsonomiya during the ***** it was refitted with post-Clan Invasion technology. The addition of an Endo steel chassis and Ferro-Fibrous armor frees up weight to swap the standard AC/10 for an Ultra Autocannon/10, retaining the two ton ammo bay, carrying standard production grade Medium Pulse Lasers in the arms and a ER Small Laser in the head, adding a C3 Slave in the center torso.

HEAVY

DRG-2Y Dragon Yorioshi - The personal ‘Mech of Benjamin Military District commander Warlord Syovo Yorioshi during the DCMS's Third Succession War invasion of Galtor III, all the standard weaponry of a Dragon save the left-arm mounted Medium Laser has been removed. Instead a Large Laser is mounted in the right arm, a Small Laser in the head and a SRM-4 and Flamer mounted where the LRM rack would normally be. With a single ton of SRM reloads, the weight saved allows five extra heat sinks to be carried and three more tons of armor to be added.

Catapult CPLT-C1 Jenny "Butterbee" - The personal ride of MechWarrior Jenny Templeton, this variant of the Catapult replaces the standard arm-mounted LRM-15s with a quartet of SRM-6 missile launchers, two in each arm

Assault

AS7-WGS Atlas Samsonov - The personal ‘Mech of Galedon Military District commander Warlord Grieg Samsonov during the DCMS's Third Succession War invasion of Galtor III, only the massive autocannon remains, with the rest of the standard weaponry replaced with a PPC mounted in each arm. The remaining weight and space is devoted to six additional heat sinks.

AS7-D Atlas Danielle - Piloted by Wolf's Dragoons Captain Danielle Rondema, this modified Atlas carried three medium lasers in each arm, trading away the SRM rack to do so. The additional heat was dissipated by two additional heat sinks that replaced the rear-firing medium lasers.

AS7-00 Atlas Jurn - This version of the Atlas was created by Preceptor Anton Jurn of the Outworlds Alliance. The traditional weaponry has been completely removed from an AS7-K chassis. The Atlas was then equipped with a Hypervelocity AC/10 and Snub Nose PPC in the right torso, while a Thunderbolt 15 launcher occupies the left torso and each arm carries a Light PPC. The ammunition for the AC and Thunderbolt are in a CASE II protected bay in the left torso. Jurn's refit also features a Cockpit Command Console that has been armored. To provide more intelligence to the commander, a Beagle Active Probe is mounted in the center torso, and each leg carries a Remote Sensor Dispenser system.

AS7-K2 Atlas Jedra - Used by Lord Jedra Kean of Vega this variant of the Atlas removed the standard weaponry. Each arm carried a Light Gauss Rifle. The right and left torsos each carried a pair of ER Medium Lasers and a single SRM 4. The center torso carried a single ER Medium Laser. The armor protection, heat sinks, and ground performance remained identical to a standard AS7-K2.

AWS-9Ma - A customized variant of the stock AWS-9M model that was utilized by Adam Steiner during the 1st Somerset Strikers' liberation of Somerset in the midst of the Clan Invasion, the pulse lasers were removed and the AWS-8Q's standard Small Laser restored, the remaining weight devoted to a Guardian ECM Suite, Command Console and two tons of advanced Communications Equipment. The small laser was moved to the left arm, and forty double heat sinks kept things cool.

AWS-9Q Klatt - Used by a minor Kell Hounds officer, this simple modification of the AWS-9Q removes the Guardian ECM suite and replaces it with a C3 Slave unit. The Small Laser is replaced by a Small Pulse Laser.

My 1st obvious choice is Yen Lo Wang ofc. Mechwarrior needs a Chuck Norris Mech LOL. The second one would be the modified Atlas of Grieg Samsonov, which is technically possible already but nothing beats a dedicated 3d model =)

Butterbee, or Atlas, people cry about OP jenners enough already, can't give them another reason to complain.

The Jenner could use another variant, but may already have three when the hero mech is out.

I kind of have a strong feeling it will be the Yen-Lo-Wang, but I hope it will be the HBK-4G Hunchback Shakir cause I love the Hunchback.

It will be the Jenner period so there will be 3 variants for non founder people.

I know how popular the Yen-Lo-Weng is but you gotta strike it off the list because of the melee weapon in the left arm. They just haven't been implemented in MWO yet, so it can't be the Hero Mech. (though if it was added I would happily pilot it myself.)

Personally I vote for the one of the Jenners or Ravens, so they can unlock Elite on the Chassis.

I got a feeling this might be right for two reasons.

The PG Gamer coverage of the highlander followed by complete silence about the highlander from PGI combined with them also having said they were saving an already finished mech for PR

Then we have the fact that the only way to get more than one variant of the highlander into the game during this time period (the other variants are extinct in the IS or only used by the ComGuard) will be with special "Hero" customisations of it. As obviously the current pilot xp system beyond basic would not work for the Highlander unless this is the case.

Well it depends on what they mean by "hero"

and whether its an already existing design thats been announced or a completely new one.

So I'll go with I dont know right now, and theres quite a few options.

Hero Mechs it isn't just one, their going to be faction specific mechs you can earn via reputation.

Unique hardpoints etc... but guess you didn't read the pc gamer, because that's what they are. Reputation mechs that are from that faction.

Reputation mechs are basically like EVE Online's Faction Battleships.
Unique hardpoints, better bonuses, generally better and everyone wants to kill you because you got a shiny ship.

MWO would be no different.
