Heh yep I can say (biased of course) that a paid staff board moderator is always best but in this particular community we have (as of my unofficial count ) 5 people that trained out of AOL university specifically for Board moderation and at least two that trained as Chat room mods and probably 10 others that trained EA / Kesmai TOS. So there are actually some pretty decent volunteers to select from :) But I agree with the person who said if ya looking for a job they gots an email addy USE it :D

I'm all for volunteer moderators. With the community that will develop here we should have no short supply of capable people.

I pray that accompanying the slew of new moderators will be a reasonable set of posted rules to start congealing the community for what is and isn't good behavior. Taking a queue from the penny-arcade forums and having more stringent rules available for topic creation and discussion in certain sections (see the difference in rules between Social Entropy and Debate and/or Discourse) really helps accommodate all types. Of course, civility, in any situation should be strictly enforced.

It's appreciated if the mods are transparent in their infraction flagging and at least provide short reasons for each.

Haha, I'm sure if they were getting volunteer moderators, they wouldn't just be picking hand-raisers in a thread.

...

In a completely unrelated note, I did used to administrate a forum back in the day... Seriously though, I was wondering this morning actually if they were gonna get a community manager, and if they'd be accepting applications :)

I'd expect anon moderators without player base conflict of interest would be chosen.

May they CRUSH the Trolls under their Mighty Axe, You all know that Moderators Drive a 90ton Mech with Heat pumps, a Hatchet and TSM and they have special 2d6 with for rolling the to hit and Hit location they have 6's on all sides. 36 points of damage to the Head. And Don't think you can get away unless your Faster than 6/9/0 Assault Mod Mech Cost $216,189,600 C-Bill before speical Targeting System is installed. (22tons of Hardend armor)

I hope they are wise with this gift.

If perchance you are picking from the community so far, I'd like to be considered as well. I have experience administrating and moderating every major forum software (phpBB, SMF, vBulletin, XenForo, Invision, etc) and have more than half a decade of experience running very large communities. I have been senior forum staff at Halflife2.net since 2005 (over 3 million posts on the forums there), I am a founder and top admin at Battlefieldo.com (one of the most prominent BF3 community sites), and I have a lot more experience running other smaller communities related to gaming in the past.

I also have a lot of experience and examples of articles, editorials, and other community content including extensive experience organizing and managing competitions, contests, giveaways, etc as well as having expert knowledge of XHTML/CSS.

Longtime fan of Mechwarrior and it would be really great to work with a community like this which is comprised largely of older, more mature folks than your average internet forum.

Was going to send someone a private message but it seems that feature is either hidden or disabled altogether so here I am instead :)

Moderators? This is a game forum. Why not just settle issues like real gentlemen, with Hollanders at twenty paces. :)

What could ruin this forum?

1. Piranha pulls a Bioware
2. Everybody
a. sucks up to the moderators and;
b. they play attention-*****, generic Internet forum style

Avoid those, and volunteer moderators for errybody!

Moderators should be chosen at random from a pool of community forwarded posters, just my two cents.

This topic is one giant pick me sign.

Personally I would love to say people in Vancouver should be picked so we can go to meetings, but I know that isn't realistic. Apart from that there should be some worldwide spread of mods so that it is not centralized in a few time zones. Although GMT-5 through GMT-8 are the majority of the market, there are plenty of players in Europe and Asia as well (If the German BT community is anything to go by).

Mods don't have to be prolific posters, however they have to know the difference between a personal post and a corporate post, and to mitigate differences. They keep the boards civil without becoming a censor. They help the newbies find the right forums and feel welcome.

Honestly if any of the mods from the Classic Battletech forums came over to this site, I would definitely recommend them. They know where to draw the line and are knowledgeable about the universe.

Just me $0.02

Mechwarrior fan since Mechwarrior 2 (I even bought Mechassault: Phantom War for the DS)

I'm in vancouver too. I drive by the PGI office every weekday, but not because I'm a stalker - it's on my commute honest!!

I'm not mod material though. However, I AM IN HOUSE BETA TESTER MATERIAL!

This, any sane person would not mod. Modding, especially with regards official forums for IP your a fan of only ends up helping to kill your passion for that IP
