Well, thar's yer problem.
You have to remember, this is the future of the 80s. Maching guns can't hit a target on the other side of a football field!
OT: Missle based AMSs, like the RIM-116 Rolling Airframe Missle, today are more geared towords defeating large anti-ship missiles, like the Russian Kh-35, which weighs half a ton, is over 12 and a half feet long, and goes Mach 0.8, as compared to what I imagine a LRM to be like, an AGM-114 Hellfire missile, which weighs 100 pounds, is 4 feet long, goes Mach 1.3, and is surely more manurverable. And that's not even talking about huge anti-ballistic missles like - in keeping with our ship-deployed systems - the SM-2 (which, if i'm correct, can shoot down cruise missles) that weighs 1 and a 1/2 tons!

Most Battlemech fights are so close in that it would not give Anti-Missile Missiles enough time to active and fire properly. Battletech Anti-Missile system are more like the Phalanxs systems used on Warships since the 1980s. The Phalanxs system is a last line of defense when aircraft and missiles have made it past all other systems on the modern day warships. Another system being used by warships is the Mark 36 SRBOC.

We have lasers that can shoot down missles...because of course lasers travel at the speed of light..where as a missle does not. For your geewizers out there the US Navy successfully test fired a offensive laser system a few months back crippling another ship miles away...crazy stuff.

i was thinking of something im unsure anyone else has mentioned here

To help with the light mechs, to make them "needed". they can have advanced computer systems.

The computer links up and takes controll of other mechs's LMS systems

So instead of everyones LMS firing at the closest missile, (multiple LMS systems hitting the same incoming missile as soon as its within firing range) it coordinates the LMS, so alot larger chunk of the incoming missiles is taken out.

I'm sure the devs would have considerd somethign like this tho

Allot of Tech has been lost since the 2700s. AMS systems did not make a come back until 3040, and, even it was limited ti certain units.

"Due to the loss of knowledge caused by the Succession Wars, anti-missile systems ceased to be produced by 2796. Only in 3040 did the Federated Commonwealth rediscover the means to produce this equipment. For the Clans, however, AMS never became LosTech,"

Did this in a gaming group once. We used the stats of a SRM2 with Frag rounds, and we used the rules for using a ams as a machine gun. It worked pretty decent knocked out 3d6 missiles but it was kinda hard to hit anything that moved 21 hexes.... kind of made up for 50 rounds of ammo...

I'm not sure about anti-missile missiles but I've been thinking about making my Raven anti-laser by chroming it out... Let it shine, shine, shine.

I'm sure it existed at one point in the BT universe. Which is why they now shoot 20 relatively weak and very slow missiles instead of one good one.

I was thinking of something that would be placed in a missile hardpoint that would automatically fire at incoming LRMs. It would be much more effective than AMS/LAMS but would have more limited ammo and would only be able to activate if you are facing the direction that the missiles are coming from.

Basically it would be the ultimate anti-LRM, but would require greater tonnage & space sacrifices than standard AMS.

nope, theres a reason they use ams and lams (ams is rapid fire small ammo that detonates inc missiles and lams just makes heat) rather then another missile to shoot a missile. standard and lams ams in lance formation can shoot down 100s of inc lrms at a time, and in the case of lams, never run out of ammo, in the case of standard its easy to have 1k ams rounds in a ton.

you can have an atlas with double ams, 2 catapults both with a single ams, and your scout jenner can have an ams, and if you are all under your ams umbrellas shared, 4 lances of lrm mechs wont be able to harm you.

the system is already good enough, no need to add in bad non canon ideas, thanks for the effort but tis not needed.

sure a patriot can hit a skud most of the time, but not 100%, and patriots cost alot more then machine gun ammo.

battle tech doesnt really have true fire and forget outside of narc beacons attracting unlocked fired missiles. in previous mech games if you lock and start fireing lrms, and lose lock before theyre all away not all will fly to target.

mrms will only track to narcs or reticle.

standard srms are rockets

streak srms lock similarly to lrms but faster lock on and lock loss times.

Fun fact, LAMS does actually exist. Overall I would think the laser would be more effective though. You're having anywhere from 2-40 missiles incoming easy and that's just per volley per mech. I could see a smart missile working in some cases but versus a lance of Catapults? Ye- maybe? Again the big concern to me would be the ammo which modern systems outside of chaff/flare don't rely on.

Don't get me wrong, it's actually an interesting idea. Not sure if it would be practical versus lasers.
