This is Jack Churchill leading a landing party...with a sword. He is the only person to have a confirmed kill during WWII, with a longbow. He also had a habit of playing bagpipes while charging into battle throwing hand grenades.

Lots of spec ops guys carry big knives, such as a bowie. When you've run out of bullets, a sword comes in real handy. He sounds like he was a student of the middle ages combat techniques, and in very close fighting, a sword is often more useful than a gun. Sideways, it can be used as a club to subdue with just a twist of the wrist.
The US Marines issue bayonets, which makes the rifle into a very short polearm. A bayonet weighs about the same as another magazine of bullets.
The longbow's kill range goes out to around a hundred meters, and it's much quieter than even a suppressed pistol, which I'm not even sure they had reliable versions of back in WWII. For killing a sentry quietly, a well placed arrow in the throat is a very good option (though you'd want to be a lot closer than 100 meters to try it). It's also easier on your own ears.
A razor head arrow will easily cut through kevlar.
