Just wondering if there's anyone here who's read these books. I myself, have read The Eye of the World and might check out The Great Hunt after I'm done with Dune Messiah. The one book I did read was pretty good, although it wasn't anything I'd write home about. From what I hear, the series gets much better after the first one, then takes a MASSIVE dip in quality, before becoming good again when Brandon Sanderson takes over.

Thoughts?

I love this series. I have not noticed a "drop in quality" and while the first book is a bit long and dry its setting up a massive set of story lines. Those that say the later books arent as good is generally because they dont like some characters, notably Elyane Egwene and Nyneave, and those books that focus on them are a bit more detailed about the conversations and some find that too chatty. I prefer to read it the way Robert Jordan intended, and I find those three to be extremely complex and interesting characters.

Robert Jordan wrote some very engrossing characters, and a huge, detailed world. The premise is wonderful, and the history is intriguing.

If you want to experience the WoT series, buy all the books. Sit down, and read them in order. This will take a while. Then gouge out your eyes for trying to keep up with the estimated 1600 named characters, unedited, huge stretches of nothing full of words, and repetative character quirks.

That said, I love the world, just can't stand the fact that Jordan padded the hell out of everything in his quest to create the ultimate doorstopper series. Easily half the content of the books could have been edited out, and the story would be much more enthralling. It drags horribly at times, then blows your mind with stretches of awesome.

I, also, am a great fan of the Wheel of Time series. I've read all the books so far, and look forward to the release of the final book in a few months. That being said, I felt that some of the books really dragged on without advancing the story much. Brandon Sanderson, who has taken up the task of finishing the series since Jordan's passing, seems to have returned to the quick pace of the best parts of the series. In my opinion, books 2 and 3 are quite good; read at least that far before making your decision to continue or quit the series.

I also did not notice a dip in the quality after book 1. However, I have yet to read anything by Brandon Sanderson. How many books are there all in all?

Read all the books to date and waiting for series to be finished finally, like the elaborate writing style if i have time to read then i am not in a rush. Only negative thing i would have to say about the series is that its been like 10 years since i read the first book, so NOW is a great time to get into them with the last book coming out this winter iirc.

Read all the books and loved them so much that in MW3 zone I called myself Rahvin. It's a shame Robert Jordan passed away before finishing the series.

The series doesn't really take a "dip in quality" as much as "get down into the weeds" with a nearly obscene amount of plot details; and really, they aren't so much "individual books" as they are one giant book released in sections. They do appear to be that coherent with each other...

I just wish sanderson would get around to releasing the final book already!!!
