I can't speak for everyone else in the community.
But I will anyway.

Yes, you will be discriminated against, in every possible way. By everyone. For no reason. Because that's the kind of people we are, all of us.

Ye, I think the soldiers of the DCMS will call you "sellsword" and "honorless dog" for being a mercenary. But other than that...no.

I've found that in most games, wheather it be the previous mechwarrior games or MMOs like WoW, you will be discriminated against if your not in a clan. Thats just the way the world is unfortunately. No one will give you any respect and just treat you like a noob.

OP: It all comes down to trust. It is easier to gain and maintain by being part of a group. Preferably a group of people that you know in advance (maybe from other games), not complete strangers. Other than that it's pretty hard to build trust, but easier to lose it. As for mercenaries, they are looked down upon for the most part, unless they have enough reputation or power (political and military) to command respect. In BT history there are plenty examples of Mercs getting bent over because they lacked any of the above. Failure or a weak position basically invite the crows and vultures, if you get what I mean. The only two things a Merc can trust is the almighty credit bill and the MRBC. Other than that you're deemed expendable and that doesn't even change when you have come to power and wealth.

Check this out, if you want to know how one of the big players in the business got treated: http://www.sarna.net/wiki/Wolf's_Dragoons
And keep in mind this is a top notch mercenary group, not a single individual merc. And if they got it bad already, despite all their advantages ...

Depends... in games like Counterstrike you have the chance to pick and choose where you play and who you play with.... the clan bias thing doesn't matter so much there. In Perpetuum Online however, the only other(Non-BT) big robot fighting MMO i've played, the clan aspect is everything. One concern I have is that the clan thing will become the be all and end all in the game and individuals will become a second class in the gmae world.

Typically in multi-player games players without clans/guilds will get a good thrashing if they end up in a PUG against a organised group. Asside from that I dont see anyone really giving you much of a hard time. Provided you are a useful player. If your one of these guys that is off on their own program being silly...expect FLACK. :(
As far as the actual game goes, you will have to build faction with the houses or merc units to gain special toys that the devs havnt told us what they are (my money is on house specific mechs and losttech weapons) just like the rest of us.

You may find that to get the best out of the game you will want to find a clan or group to play with. Public/open/pick-up games are OK but if you want organised, competitive team play you'll want to be involved in the 12v12 house/mercenary battles. Depends what you're looking for.

You do not have to be in a house, unit, or a clan to be considered a good player. :(

Just do what you should, help others and your reputation will surely make you the honored quest joining our side.

If you are good, I will honour your skills in combat.

If you are not, I will shoot you myself.

Being a lone wolf, merc or Davion doesn't matter. The weak will be fodder for the strong.

Perhaps a summary of what people are getting at:

As a lone wolf bouncing from game to game, faction to faction, no one group is going to get to know/respect you as a player as much as they would if they saw you frequently.

If you play poorly, even if it's just a fluke, be sure that the 9 faction members who lost the round along side you will blame the 3 lone wolf players for the loss. If you play well, no one will know you well enough to think it necessary to pat you on the back and say good job.

Obviously this isn't going to be 100% true 100% of the time, but anyone who has been around online games for a while can see the trend.

If you play a merc, you will probably be treated differently than a house unit based on the nature of your relation to the powers that be. Some houses are accepting of mercs, and some cannot stand them. I would guess the contracts offers will be where most discrimination will surface. I don't see contracts from the FRR and the Combine as being merc friendly given the hatred/disgust these houses have for mercs. Davion, Lyran and FWL contracts will probably be be much more merc-friendly given how these houses use mercs guite often. The Davions might use your unit as bait or some other way you would niot like and not tell tou. The Lyrans may not support you as well as you would likle if it means one of their favorite merc units sufferd. The FWL will probably be a good employer unless we get into an internal rebellion. That can be really nasty; just ask Wolfs Dragoons. Bware the company store policies of the Cconfederation as the Liaos are known for trying to coerce mercs units into their house armed forces,

If you affiliate your unit with a particualar house as many merc units do, this relationship should change for the better.

You will be assimilated.
Resistance is futile.
Your distinctiveness will be added to our own.

-------------------

OK, enough of that. If you go read the dev blogs, etc., you will see that you can play as a mercenary.

That's not to say that everyone will shower you with hugs and kisses. In an online community of this size, you will encounter pretty much all types of behavior. Most will probably be easy enough to get along with, but you should also steel yourself for encounters with unpleasant individuals (or even groups). Just remember, it's a game. We're talking pixels on your screen, and bits in a database.

If it's not messing with your wallet, your dinner, or your sex life... it's probably not worth getting upset about.
