WOW, can't hardly wait. I wonder how much of the wing commander property he still owns and how much may end up in this game. This news may actually top the news of Mechwarriors return.

I upgraded my PC to a 286 because WinCommander ran better using 3 MB main-memory than 640 KB  Than upgraded to a 386 because WC2 required faster speed. Same for WC3 to a 486 and WC4 to a Pentium 60 (yea, 60 wopping MHZ!!!).

WC always set the standard of great gaming for me and I was sad as tehy stopped producing more of the series. Even watched the crappy WC feature film trice B)

So, hell yea, he will get some money from me! :D

It is not a MMO. It is a single player game with additional MMO content. You can go for the SP alone, offline if you wish, and never bother to interact with the rest of the world.

Has chris actually said this ?

From what I've read and seen, you will still have to be "online" to access the Squadron 42 missions and after completing them you then get thrown into the full multiplayer universe part as you have now "retired" from your military job etc.

You of course can do the missions solo and nobody can stunt your progress etc, but you can also do them with actual players as wingmen etc.

You also can just not do the missions at all and go straight into the multiplayer universe but you probably will get a few things by completing the squadron 42 content so it may be worth it to some, namely a different starting ship or something I'd say.

Whatever way it works its still great its on the cards. Hopefully all the ideas are fully realized , much like I hope the idea's for MWO are fully realized.

Directly from his homepage:
  • Wing Commander style single player mode, playable OFFLINE if you want

Playable offline or online, co-op with friends, you sign up for a tour of duty with the UEE fleet, manning the front lines, protecting settlements from Vanduul warbands.

I have bad news...
In a Interview Chris Roberts says that Star Citizen will be able to be more Power Demanding and using than it is expected from the "Next-Gen" Consoles... And in the same Paragraph he says, that the next Consoles will be near the Perfomance of a PC with a AMD HD 7950....

So you will need at least have 8970 or so when Star Citizen comes out for Playing, for the Full (3D) experience.

But wasn't it everytime so except WC5? That you could afford the PC to run the Game Smoothly 6 Month AFTER the Game comes out?

So Business as usual.

Btw he also said that Star Citizin will Support ALL Kinds of PC Controlls, from Keyboard/Mouse to Hightech Hotas... except Kinetic...

Not a problem, Elkarlo. The game is scheduled for late 2014. until then we will have, or at least be near to, Radeon HD10xxx and GeForce 9xx cards. So a console will be outclassed again, by a large margin. ;)

"Yer about to suck void, buddy!"
"You're a loose end looking to be tied."
"I shall feast on your entrails."
"Feel righteous fire!"

-Don (Independence Wars II came close, but it wasnt as open-ended as WC:Privateer, it was too buggy, and it just did not have the great one-liners)

I'm glad someone else has posted about this! I feel like the Mechwarrior community would be the first to show some love for the return to the PC Golden Era of gaming. I feel like we are truly getting back to the deep, rewarding experimentation within the world of virtual entertainment. First Mwomercs now this! If you haven't already, check Star Citizen out! BACK IT, BACK IT TILL YOU CAN't BACK IT ANYMORE....

Considering that we just got a new X-Com and Jagged Alliance, and will soon have the spiritual successor to Total Annihilation and SupCom (Planetary Annihilation) and Wasteland 2... yes, I think we may be entering another golden age of PC gaming.

well it will also have a single player campaign separate from the multiplayer like MMO part (or universe as he described it).
