Hi guys,
so as I have loved MechWarrior games for years but never read a single book (shame on me), I was wondering:
Where to start? Any book in particular? What's best to get into the universe?
Is Dark Ages a good start? Or will I not understand a single word?

BattleTech Universe: What book for starters?

Here's a backgrounder for the lore: http://www.battletec...erseGuide-1.pdf
As for the novels, I'd recommend starting with the "Saga of the Gray Death Legion" trilogy and "The Warrior" trilogy.

I totally agree with Decision at Thunder Rift being your first foray; it's the first book of the Saga of the Gray Death Legion...a couple of the older Battletech games used this storyline. It's simple but classic.
From there, I'd recommend choosing books by either the timeline or by the author. Frankly there are some half-a**ed authors as there are in all role-playing series books; Stackpole is generally agreed to be the best.

Perfect thread, I'm also looking for my first book to read in the Battletech universe. For me, once I find a series I tend to read every book in the series before moving on.

But note, stackpole is a MASSIVE Daviot fanboy. so take anything he writes with a grain of salt. Romano and Mad Max might have been mad, but the capellans are generally the most united and dedicated of the groups. Other than having Liao blood, everything here is usually based on merit.
