Hey all,

There's been a few topics that covered a few of my concerns, but because of my limited knowledge of the actual game (Mostly due to limited information and me droooooooling to get into the beta when it goes open), I have a few things I'd like to touch on to hopefully put my worries aside.

The first one comes to mech progression. While I am sure the best way to learn is to start on the lower tonnage and move upward, will this be forced or will you start with several options? I am thinking particularly of my expirence in World of Tanks (To which I'll be drawing alot of comparisons and concerns). You started with light tanks and moved up, but at that point it discouraged proper scouting (To which I STILL cant get it right), in exchange for light-wieght fire-fights. Is this how it is going to be when you first jump in, with alot of Jenners and Commandos running around like it's quake, or will you still be fulfilling a role aside from being another body in the meat grinder?

The second comes to how one is expected a medium mech to participate? It seems to me they are brawlers, but will need to be a lance on their own for wolf-pack tactics. Again, drawing from my WoT expirence, this seems to be a failing tactic, and while I have no doubt that some medium mechs can fulfill the roles of scouts and brawlers, it seems like they just wont have the movement to live, the damage potential to deal, or the armour to survive, so when you finally get up to medium mechs (Assuming tonnage escilation by expirence/c-bills) what good are they really going to be aside from fly-swatters taking pot-shots at scouts?

The third comes down to how are the teams going to be balanced, particularly when it comes to player-tiers (The game being balanced is all and well, but I dont have a great record in most FPSs, lucky to break even), will the game try to balance out players as well as mech tonnage, or am I doomed before I even start? It's got to get boring for the better players when they've taken out me in an atlas using a jenner for the seventh time (Dont laugh, it will happen, repeatedly, at length, with many tears.)

Anyway, there are alot of concerns I have, but those are the big three. Hope to gain some insight or useful infromation. Thanks for your time,

- MD

Quite a few medium mechs carry pretty powerful weapons. The shadow Cat, and Hollander 2 both carry a gauss rifle. (guass rifle is a electro magnetic railgun in case you didn't know. well along those lines) The hunchback carries the AC 20 which is pretty powerful the clan version of it which won't be in until later if it gets in carries two AC 20's. The shadow cat moves as fast as many of the lights as well just more armor and heavier firepower.

I'll have to wait until further mechs are released, but thus far the only mech I dont see being on fly-swatting duty is the Hunchback (Which if i recall off hand is 2 Ultra AC-20s on the clan varrient, laying down 4 AC-20 shots in a single burst). They dont refer to mediums by role so much as Attacker/Defender which is basicly marginal tweaks to pilot stats and such. That being said, I am still looking for anything on the match making system that takes individual player skill into account (And will probably still be looking by the time this thread goes completely dead).

Thanks for the quick responces.

Mediums are the work-horses of a Mech unit. They will see use in every available role on the battlefield.
Underestimate them at your peril! B)

I believe it has been stated that all players will have access to all available Mechs.

If you're in a medium mech trying to 1v1 a heavy or assault mech then you're doing it wrong. Medium mechs work best when supplementing their firepower in the right places. Mechwarrior Living Legends really exemplifies this as was said before with regards to heavy hitters like the Shadowcat and Bushwhacker for example. The Centurion and Hunchback thus far look ready to fulfill their roles B)

You'll be able to start off in any mech class, and pilot skill will hopefully be balanced with skill in the Mechlab (for example, I have rather average pilot skill but am some sort of god at mechlab-use). And don't underestimate mediums, they can do anything and do it well. The role I see mediums in in this game is as rapid-response units that can hit anywhere hard and fast.

Guess the last one comes down to match making. Mostly because I am going to feel REALLY bad for the poor ******* who gets me in a lance, because he'll be pulling double-duty knowing my own skills at FPSs and Sims. I admit to being a bad player, so my only real chance is to follow orders and pray that somehow it follows through. Would hate to stick a person who is really good with me or people like me in the same lance, but it's not so much a deal if you have 4 v 4 equally skilled players (or in my case, equally bad).

Still reading B)

Since you use WoT for some examples, I just recommend supporting your heavies, which a lot of folks don't do. Unless you're scouting, don't go off by yourself. Concentrate fire. It's all pretty basic stuff but sad to see when everyone lemmings off to one side and ignores a flank. Another thing to remember is that the units are smaller here...a lance instead of a company of 15 tanks so being on the ball is going to be more important. One bad player in a group of 15 can be worked around. One bad player in a team of 4 isn't much fun. Don't keep telling yourself you are a bad player...just go with your strengths. If you need to rely on others then go for a support role and don't forget the most important thing of all: just have fun.

In this type of game all classes of mechs should be able to shine and be fun to play for any one. I personally am a medium/heavy mech guy. Mediums have a good mix of weapons/speed/protection. Medium mechs aren't the best at fire support but using their mobility and decent firepower are very good mechs for supporting other mechs and/or finishing off mechs.

Lol, well, that would require me having a strength, but thus far it's been my expirence that I cant even pull off bullet-spounge duty. Still, you are right with basic strategy, just have never had it succeed (Doesnt mean I like being a lone wolf, just makes me the weakest link of the chain). I am all for having fun, I'd just like to know how the game is balanced in terms of player skills, because as the developers have said time and time again, this is a game of skill.

And as for 'dont keep telling yourself your a bad player', sometimes you just gotta know where you sit on the totem pole. I aint a young-gun anymore, so let the kiddies take the glory of being a team-carrying machine, I just rather know how to stop getting in their way. lol. But hey, if you think You want to lance with me during the open beta, I am all for it.
