Gotta love that slogan they put on the front page there:

Avoid the pain
of Windows 8.

The all-new Ubuntu 12.10 is out now.

Great news! (I've been running the kubuntu 12.10 beta for a couple weeks now, but it's great to know that the full repository's up to grade now)

More importantly, though, is MWO running stably in a current wine build yet? (please tell me I can ditch my reboot-to-windows routine. Please!)

Haha - I'm in the same boat. Windows only exists on my rig because of gaming. Have you tried installing the MWO client using "Play On Linux"? I haven't yet...

Why would I install a tablet OS or a server OS on my home machine? Neither linux or windows 8 are good choices. Stick with windows 7.

I have both on my pc. And you know what - default Ubuntu's "Unity" desktop IS pain, even more than Windows 8.

To get "classic" interface on ubuntu one have to install "gnome classic" theme from packages and select it as default. On Windows 8 the old desktop is already there. Also possible to get old start menu back, but for me the new Metro stuff is even better. Though I'm also using Windows mostly for games.

Linux is neither a server or tablet OS. Depending on the build and the services you bolt on to the default OS you can have a server platform, but windows allows for limited networking options in it's own OS like setting up domains and the like. I'll be sticking with Wondows 7 as well because of gaming and running Microsoft Office, but I run Fedora in dual boot on my laptop for when I want to do programming or work on something diffrent. If Linux recieved support from the hardware and software manufactures it would stand toe to toe with Windows and MacOS and I think surpass them.

Windows 8 is a tablet OS.

Linux is a server OS. It is excellent when used by IT professionals for a professional purpose. It has no place in my grandparents' computer. It is stable, but not user friendly and not anywhere near as moron proof as windows 7 or OSX.

Ubuntu 12.10 Desktop is a true Desktop OS, while Ubuntu 12.10 Server is a true Server OS. Simples. And, thanks to Steam, Ubuntu Desktop will have some native AAA games as well. I will always remember Gabe Newell labeling Windows 8 "a catastrophe"! :)

Which Linux distro are we talking about? RHEL? CentOS? SLES? Then yes, I agree. Else, it's not so clear cut. That's the same as saying Ford is a truck. I bet that SUV, van, and sedan drivers might disagree... :)

My 60-year-old mother has been using ubuntu's default interface (ugh, shudder) with no problems (aside from a week long learning period, pretty mild given her non-tech attitude) for three releases now. She needs significantly less help with it than she did with windows.

I've been using the Kubuntu KDE desktop on my computer and it's perfect for all my non-gaming needs (Blender, Kdenlive, Ardour2qt, Krita, and the like all perform wonderfully for my media creation needs) and much of my gaming as well, since the flightsim I play, FreeSpace2Open, and it's various spin-offs (Side note: CHECK OUT DIASPORA: SHATTERED ALLIANCE) run natively with better performance than on windows by an average of 3 to 6 fps in the most chaotic of space battles. (NOTE: BENCHMARK APPLIES ONLY TO MY SYSTEM)

Sitting in my Mechpit, just had several great drops with the House. Running Windows 8 with no problems on all games.

Just to be clear, Diaspora is a complete free stand-alone game that happens to use the FS2O engine. It doesn't require an up-to-date FS2O installation or much of anything else except the Diaspora Episode 1: Shattered Armistice release and the 1.3 patch (and the ability to follow a very straightforward readme, if you're on linux).
