i haven't seen too much unbalence in the match ups
i'll assume the game system tries to balence tonnage / mech types
however last night is a good example
other team had two atlas's , we had 1
they only had 1 light mech. we had several
so we were out gunned / out tonnaged
since its so close to open beta i'm not sure what changes are coming
my thoughts were to have game optoins of Light only
medium only, etc. this would make it more of even playing field based on skill and new players wouldnt be
over whelmed and have a chance at getting kills in light only matches
or light only limit. then medium/light, heavy/medium/light, all
because it doesn't matter if you stick with your jenner and get all the unlocks
if its a match of 8 jenners vs 8 atlas's...
sure you will annoy the heck out of them and run circles around them, but all they have to do
is get you once...
and yes me and another jenner went and ran circles around a cat, atlas, raven once.
cat died, raven was really beat up, atlas was still standing when match was lost
(note they were also really bad pilots)

limiting mech size in matches

While I can definitely appreciate your feelings when something like this happens (I was doing my scout 'mech role last night....ran into a lance of 3 Atlases and an Awesome, their second lance was all Centurions and Hunchbacks), and it is extremely frustrating to be outmatched and out-tonnaged(?) like that, I also feel that it's part of the Mechwarrior and Battletech experience. Wars in Battletech are never fair fights, and being forced into an undesirable combat situation makes players adapt and develop new tactics, which can be a rewarding experience all its own.

Might be interesting for tournament/personal challenges. Not sure I'd like it in regular play. Besides, think about the bragging right if your two light/medium lances manage to defeat a couple of assault lances in a match.

yes i understand about that, just seemed REALLY lopsided
trust me i like challenges, just not when i see most of the other team is heavy / assaults and we are mostly
medium / heavy
yes if you have good aim, etc you can pull off some good kills, so long as the other players aren't as skilled
i've also since read in the actual BETA forum about some other things they are trying
i didn't have access to that before posting here about it

I'm not entirely sure on how the game can and will play out. However, should one do attack and defend or any other mission based fight, I think you can have limiting factors such as the money you pay towards the dropship (weight being limited by the dropship hired/bought/owned) Defense can be limited by the surviving occupational force that owns the planet and they would be limited by hanger space and or supplies the planet/town/city/base can support. Also, by using this balancing factor for a defensive force, ammunition and limited repair supplies, this could make for very interesting second or third rounds.
Other than that, I think you could just do weight limits and leave the choices to those joining or creating the game. However, one problem I foresee is the number of crazy heavy mechs. In the battletech world I remember, heavy and assaults where not common even if you had the money to buy them. Replacement parts, even more rare than the mechs themselves. So these two game dynamics actually helped balance the game and forced the use of, what my old friends and I referred to as common mechs. One other thing that can be added are factories on planets and the production of particular mechs and mech parts. I relize I probably went a bit too far with this topic... but yeah, my thoughts.

Actualy Duke Blaine those are very good idea's as well as being right inline with the BattleTech/Mechwarrior books. that would add tramendous game play also adding Omni mechs when they deside( if they deside about Clan ) would also seem to fit those criteria because i know a few medium Omni's that would just trash some of the heavier/assault mechs.( if they apply the proper stats to them in any case).

I admit to having not played for a few days, but matches for the past while have been balanced by weight class. assault to assault, heavy to heavy, medium to medium, and light to light. The closest thing I have seen to being outmatched lately is when it couldn't find a matching team member for your team, and you are outnumbered. I don't think what you are saying you ran into is possible anymore unless the reverted the matchmaker. It used to happen all the time.
Anyway there rarely is such a thing as a fair fight, one side almost always has an advantage. Fair fights end in a duel between 2 damaged mechs that are the last on their respective teams. Sure I've seen and done that a few times, but that is by far the exception rather than the rule, usually one side beats the other fairly decisively.
