Looks like this was Blizzards strategy with Diablo III. one open beta weekend and whoops, release for one of the most anticipated games of all time and what a surprise there was high demand to use the servers? Whoda thunk it?

This is pretty realistic, but only for groups that depend on a specific software.

Microsoft does it with nearly every other OS release. Internal company software does it all the time as well, though usually not with financial stuff.

yeah...not so much, as the last software release meeting I went to (like 3 days before roll out), at the end I made the comment 'Well at least the load testing went well' and the developers looked at me like I just ate their baby.

You seriously forgot to load test the application the traders use?

*facepalm*
