Just want to ask if anyone else got into Battletech through reading Lethal Heritage when you were a kid?

That got me to watch the fantastically crummy cartoon series (and awesome[irony] toys) and to get my parents to buy a pentium computer so I could play Mechwarrior 2 and play as a Wolf Clan mechwarrior and that was it.

I guess more of a 'play it, now understand it' ideology for you, right?

Either way, I had everyone in Jr High calling me Phelan for two years.... half the people didn't even pronounce it right...no one called me Kai though...not a big Capellan fan...but one b'dass mechwarrior there in allard

Hells yeah. Well sorta... My dads best friend worked for GW and was into TT. My dad started playing and by default so did i. then there was the cartoon and the videogames. but it really all went down hill when i picked up lethal heritage.

Yeah, me too. Stumbling over "Tödliches Vermächtnis" in the public library was my first contact with Battletech and ultimately brought me here.

Actually, I started with the computer games, getting into MechWarrior 2 by way of the Metaltech series (Earthsiege and Battledrome).
I chose Jade Falcon over Wolf, mainly because I personally prefer green over red and birds over canines.

My first BT/MW novel, IIRC, was the Legend of the Jade Phoenix omnibus; it, Ghost of Winter, and Freebirth are my favorites among the novels (of which I have read the majority - including the Dark Age material).
Though, my first BT/MW book was TRO 3058 - mainly because I recognized the Bushwacker from the animated series.

One would think that I would be much more sympathetic to the Clans (particularly the Jade Falcons; Aidan Pryde and/or Horse FTW?) or the Lyrans (Adam Steiner FTW?), but 'twas not to be... :P

yeah, me too! Going back and reading a bunch of the books, especially those by stackpole. I know a lot of people seem to think he is biased towards victor davion but honestly he just makes the guy seem human flaws and all. It's his mistakes in politics that get his loved ones killed(one particular character comes to mind) and eventually make him rescind his claim to both thrones. My favorite character is definitely Phelan though.

Well I played the original Mechwarrior on PC (leg shots and all), and then I played TT. I went to GenCon and played a couple of TT matches there and did pretty well. I played so much TT I had the weapons ranges, to-hit numbers, and damage roll charts memorized. Of course I read the Blood of Kerensky trilogy when those came out, and I still think they are some of the finest novels written. Whatever happened to Michael Stackpole? I wish he would have written some more Battletech stuff.
I even drove to Chicago from Missouri to play at the Battletech Center. It was so cool then, but so crude compared to what we have now. When MW2 came out, I thought that was as good as it could get, and I would have to say that it is still my favorite of all of them. I played a little MW3 and 4, but not too much.
I quit playing for many years, but when I saw MWO and especially when I played it, I was hooked all over again.
I'm thinking about running through all the PC games all over again, starting with Mechwarrior. Weapon systems online!

Oh man, time to boot up DOSBox! I've been farting around with trying to get my old MW2: Pentium Edition running again...Used to play it all the time about 5 years ago...had a comp just for that w/ a Pentium 100mhz...smooth as silk. Too bad for floods though.

You've gotta have about a computer sciences doctorate just to figure out how to get those old games running on Win7 these days.

The books...so much of a basis for many of our obsessions. I've only read 11 of them in my time so far, youth or now, but does anyone have a specific book outside of the two trilogies related to Phelan Kell that I would enjoy? Or maybe one you just really liked?

Oh I played Earthsiege... played it quite terribly, I must say. but such an awesome game for it's day. I really loved the visual customisations you could do, where an EMP looked like you had an EMP, etc... My interests just stemmed to BT (and stuck there) by rooting in a couple of fact-filled books, quiaff?

I started with Mechwarrior 2, then 3. The instruction manual to 3 was how I discovered the board game, which then came with a catalog through which I discovered the books. Lethal Heritage was the first book I read, and I immediately Phelan became my favorite character. Also the scene where his Wolfhound can't tell if he is fighting a Catapult or Marauder is my favorite in the Battletech universe.

Not going to lie though. I was confused as hell by the change in names of the Mechs between Mechwarrior 2 and 3.

"A large laser at 700 meters!?"

A little learning curve there. I always liked the name Blackhawk over Nova even though the latter is more appropriate.

For me it was MW2 on Play Station 1. Then Mech Commander a few years later, which came with a mech booklet and then Mech Commander Gold, then Mech Commander 2, MW4 complete series, then MegaMek & Neveron.

I downloaded the Mech 2 demo when I was a week kid and couldn't stop playing it over and over, but I didn't jump in full tilt until I found the novel Highlander Gambit a short time later.

If you have not read The Jade Phoenix trilogy or The Twilight of the clans saga I highly recommend those.
