So an few weeks back i was looking to upgrade my CPU on my desktop. Instead of purchasing the latest and greatest I decided to go with an upgrade for the LGA 775 socket and grab a core 2 quad. I was looking at some q9450s and q9550s that people had suggested on ebay. However, about this time I had some issues with my memory. This is the 2nd stick of ram I've had go out in the past 6 months. Crucial has been great in their customer service, but they are running out of this specific module.
This has caused me to think that it is not worth putting any money into the current setup, and would be better spent on grabbing some new hardware. I had hoped to make use of the current setup for a year to year and a half longer, but who knows if it will make it. With this in mind, I started keeping an eye on Craigslist and the web for some deals. There is an i5 3570k for sale in my area that is new sealed in box for $189 or best offer. I was wondering what others felt about this deal? I figured I would offer $175 and see if he would bite. The story is that he accidentally ordered two and doesn't want to pay for restocking.

$190 new? Yeah, do it. Even if he didn't drop the price, that's well worth it.

I'd go for it, but only if they accepted $175(remember, the warranty won't be in your name). I got my Q9650 under the same basic circumstances. Socket 1366 was just released and the guy claimed he bought the wrong CPU. I bought the Q9650 from him for $275($50 under Newegg price at the time), used it for 3 years with it OC'ed as high as 4.25ghz(it would do 4.5ghz in a Gigabyte P45 UD3P board), and sold it for $225 last year. It's still being used today.

That's what I was thinking. I do have to take a ferry to get to a place we could make the transaction. Figured I'd try to take some off to cover that.
I remember reading somewhere that intel warranties are not transferable. Does anyone know if this applies only after the box has been opened, and you register the product, or do you need the original sales receipt? I'd hate to have it brick out in a year and have no recourse with intel.
EDIT: Barbaric your reply came in while I was still typing. That pretty much answers it. Well, I have never had a CPU die, but knowing my luck it would happen within 3 years, the one time I have no warranty.

You can get one for the same price from MicroCenter (in store...), and then they also knock $50 of a mobo if you buy it there, which is already likely already sale too. I paid $189 for my 3570k and $100 for my mobo (Z77e-itx) after the combined discounts. I have no regrets.

You can grab a brand new ivybridge (3rd gen) i5 3570K from newegg for $229. Combine that with a Z77 board, some SSD's and you're rocking.

Oh, and even when on a budget here's my suggestion. Start with a good motherboard and CPU - research and find peripherals that are vendor qualified products for your mainboard and cpu - in other words do your homework before starting any build or upgrade or you'll face issues down the road (eg: hardware failure(s), OS errors, compatibility issues, so many parameters the list can go on forever) - once your build or upgrade plan is solid and on paper/document slowly make purchases when able - I then recommend looking on the top selling and most trusted sites for sales (ie: newegg shell shocker daily deals) and before you know it you'll be assembling your new PC or overhauling that old beast you have now - regardless I wish you the best on your endeavor.

I always hate when people bring up microcenter because we don't have any here in Washington. It makes me real jealous because they always seem to have screaming deals. Really all I need is a new MB CPU and RAM. All my other equipment is much newer and can roll over to my new computer.
