I know the devs talked about this, but it left me a bit confused.

Will there be tech trees, where for example after totally tricking out your Jenner you unlock a more advanced (higher tier) scout mech?

Thoughts, random speculation? pure heresay?

We know there will be a skill tree for your Mechwarrior to upgrade in, but for mech modules like new engines and stuff, it's complete speculation.

so is there no requirement that you unlock a new mech? Simply you must have enough c-bills?

Well your pilot has to know how to pilot that mech somehow........ I don't know. Perhaps you have to raise a skill level with that mech the more you use it.

At this point there is no evidence to suggest that one mech requires any higher 'level' than any other mech. They cost c-bills and you just need to be able to afford them. This game is not set up like WoT.

'Leveling' in MWO is split between Pilot XP and individual mech XP. The Mech XP makes you more proficient at driving a mech the longer you use it. Pilot XP is seperate and is related to defining the specialty role you choose to play.

As far as I understand it, you'll get seperate 'Mech XP as you pilot a mech that unlocks minor upgrades (+% to speed, 'mech cooldown, that kind of thing) for the specific VARIANT of the chassis that you're piloting. As in, the piloting the Hunchback standard variant (-4G?) improves how you can handle it, but not how you can handle a Hunchback of the Swayback variant.

If you unlock enough upgrades in each variant of that chassis, you can unlock a further, "elite" tier upgrade that improves pretty much every upgrade-stat by a fixed percentage, which has effect across every variant of that chassis.

Then you get another block of variant-specific upgrades, followed by another "elite" upgrade, and so on for however many levels they decide to do.

So all you need to get to a new chassis is the C-bills to purchase one of the available variants of that chassis, but playtime in any variant will give minor improvements to first that specific variant and later to every variant on that chassis.

I got this from this dev blog here. Pilots will apparently get a different kind of XP separately, that unlocks different things.

+1 for Madtypist, I really appreciated your summary of how the tech trees will work. Thanks for that mate. It is a bit frightening though that all you need is money to buy the best chasis. Will this result in noobs getting in game buying 100 ton assault mechs from day 1 as they purchased in game c-bill with real money and now have access to the best mechs?

Don't know if this is bad or good.

Assault mech do not equal the best mechs. This game is based on 'role warfare' unlike most other games where bigger is better. Right out of the gate people will be able to choose an Assault as their free initial choice.

Believe it is classified as good. The assault mech is not an "I Win" button. Someone who doesn't know what they're doing will get wasted by Jenners, or possibly Commandos. The way the mechs are balanced in these games means the big guys carry more guns and armor but those are only effective if you use them right.

Several of them do, in fact that's a good place to start if you're concerned, the medium and assault videos at least.

Thats right Vester, and might I add that each mech plays a key role as oppossed to WoT where the light tanks and mediums are treated like stepchildren.

There are more games than just WoT out there. Seriously. Okay, but it's the only example I ever see. Tribes Ascend is also free, and features light, medium, and heavy armor. Each of which like the weight classes in MW have a point. Just because WoT is F2P too doesn't mean any of the good F2P are much like it. :o

For sure, but its hard to deny the sheer volume of people asking questions that seem to be rooted in their attempt to understand MWO in terms of a WoT style game. This one asking about tech trees for example is undoubtedly so.

So you wonder will there be tech tree like in WoT and i think it won't be only thing you need to get mech you want is C-bills and when you get mech then you will be puting exp in to to unlock tech, i suggest you check dev blog abut that.

I really hope you're right.......well at least it's not World of Tanks so we shouldn't be hearing, "that shot bounced." Theoretically role warfare aside, a scout mech can damage an assualt mech albeit not very much.
