A steam group... not actually on steam as in a download, though that would be a kicking way to distribute the game to the masses..

So . . does this mean it will be a steam game?
Or is that just general news on the steam network?

I hope they consider using Steam. It will help to advertise the game and it's just convenient.

Steam groups can be made by players for anything, its just like the old yahoo groups. I could make a steam group for knitting if I wanted to. Nothing to my knowledge has been stated about MWO being on steam at all.

Integrating MWO with steamworks would actually be interesting.
Guess it only depends on them and Valve

I would not mind doing advertising on steam for it. but running the game through steam would be bad. I am sorry i have gotten games through them before and I have had issues. and going through a middle man is never a good idea.

i tried out Steam 6 years ago and use it almost every day.
i can't say it has any disadvantages (with the exception of censored violence in different countries). maybe you just have a bad internet connection and because of that issues with downloading/updating these games, but Steam offers so many possibilities for any type of game or developer.

imho it's great :)

I'm sure they're considering putting it on Steam. After working with Duke Nukem Forever's multiplayer section, they're well-versed in Steamworks multiplayer code, which saves them time having to program their own multiplayer service and pay for servers.

And the publicity Steam would provide would be through the roof--it would be one of the few games in the Free To Play section, which means tons of people would try the game out, potentially falling in love with the game and the universe and, ideally, paying Piranha money for in-game content. Plus, everyone who plays MechWarrior Online instantly gives a popup to all of their buddies on their buddy list, and those buddies will go "MWO? What's that? I'll try it!"

And nevermind the Steam Wallet means a much larger source of income than if they came up with their own system. The Steam Wallet means that parents can put money on their childrens' accounts, letting them buy their own stuff--this means that if they put MechWarrior on Steam, they'll have an income from a massive demographic of children playing their game that they might not otherwise have. Nevermind that Steam allows Steam Wallet to be refilled so easily mid-game... their profits from regular adults would go up too.

However, here's the two stumbling blocks. First, not everyone loves Steam. I do, most of the people I know do, rational people in general do, but some people don't. Cut those people out of the sales potential. Personally, I think Steam would get them more customers than they'd lose, but that's just my opinion, not a statistic.

Second, Steam takes a cut of all in-game-store profits. This means either a) more expensive items for the customers, meaning less sales or :D less money per sale.

However, again: I think the amount of money they'd gain by having the Steam demographic and advertising would far, far outweigh any money they'd lose through having to give Steam its cut, and they'd have to pay less money for multiplayer development/server costs/distribution costs.

So hopefully, they'll agree with my assessment and put the game on Steam. If they don't though? Well, I'm still getting the game anyway, it'll just go into my Steam shortcuts list :)

...unless they publish exclusively on Origin. If you do that Piranha, I'm not playing this game. Sorry -.-

Addendum: Also, normally I'd be able to say "Check out their publisher, see if they frequently publish on Steam!" but alas, their publisher is brand new. Still, if they're new and trendy enough to take a risk with MechWarrior, they might be new and trendy enough to put the game on Steam.

And again, I see tons of my friends playing free to play games not because they're free to play, but because they're free to play ON STEAM, which makes them automatically 10x more accessible for trying, deciding whether they like or not, and deleting if they don't.

Steam did recently add F2P support. I'm a big fan of spiral knights actually.

Going to steam is a great idea and if the game is even halfway decent, I'm sure Valve would be for it. Getting into steam gives a lot of exposure... and to many of us, convenience.

I really hope to see this on Steam. I use that service almost exclusively these days. The convenience is unparalleled.

Steam could really help advertising MWO and make people that don't know MW to have a look at it

Having the option to get it through Steam or through their own site would be the way to go I think. Best of both worlds, since those who love Steam can get it through Steam, and those who do not will never have to bother with it.
Even if it is not on Steam to begin with though, I will be adding it as a non-Steam game just to get everyone on my friends list to ask what the heck I am playing.

An Origins exclusive though, with the BS in their ToS..It would make a MechWarrior cry for not being able to play.

I'd use Steam more if they put this on there, and it'd be smart because it'd open the game to an entire legion of players that "aren't in the know" like we are.

That and I'd love to see what kind of stuff Valve and PG would come up with for this game.

These things. It would be good for it to be on Steam too, if only for these reasons. For example you can now get DCU online on steam, or directly from the DCU people. So you have a choice.

No, don't cut them out altogether. Have a steam client and a downloadable client. I for one am a huge fan of steam, but a lot of people aren't. Why throw away or "cut out" 20% of your sales?

I have to agree with you in that we agree with Mr. Smiles. A very long, well thought out response, exploring the positive and potential negative aspects of putting this on Steam. Having not used the Steam Wallet yet, I have no idea how it works, so I appreciate that explanation too.

I don't see it launching through Origin. Isn't that EA-only? *pause* Oh, wait, they did sign on with third-party folks recently. But still, I don't see these guys going to Origin over Steam. I wasn't originally thinking that it would launch through Steam int he first place, but Steam being able to host the servers would be GREAT for Piranha.

Steam has been nothing but trouble for me. Pay for a game then you cannot play it while you're on tour because of a testy Internet connection, unacceptable for single player games with no need for Internet connection.
I hate it.
Still, if it's an online mechwarrior game I will deal with the devil.
