is there a way to play with a firend so the two of us can be playing on the same side in the same session.
with out having to join a clan channel or do we require to join a pug group first then wait in queue as a group of 8 ?
example in WOT you can create a platoon of just two and join other platoons of 2's and 4's to make up a full group for a session

How do you play with a friend and join a session

Go to the social button, then first invite them to be your friend. Then Create a Group, then invite your Friend to your Group. They accept. You both hit the Launch button to Ready up. Then finally under group options click the "Group Launch" button.
(Don't quote me on the last step, not sure on the exact wording of the Group Launch button)

Whenever I create a group and try to invite someone, it always tells me "Failed to send invitation". Is there a missing step somewhere?

Are you sure it says the group is not complete? Because if it actually says the group is not ready, that just means not everyone in the group has signalled that they're ready for drop. The ready button is where the 'Launch' button usually is, make sure everyone presses it and then use the group menu to actually launch.
Disclaimer: I've never actually got this far, so I'm just guessing about how it works.
