Something I thought about this morning. What is stopping people from making a lance of nothing but Awesomes, or Hunchbacks? WIth the wepon aim system as it is, wouldn't some teams compensate with just having multiples of said mech? A lance of Hunchbacks made me shudder back in tabletop days, for few mechs can stand a barrage of ac20's for long, or multiple PPC shots. 2 Awesomes would be overkill I think, but it is soemthing that was in my mind.

Well, if someone want's to make a lance of Hunchbacks or whatever, there really shouldn't be much stopping them. Except for the fact that they would all have the same weaknesses and drawbacks. Besides, a well balanced lance would have different 'mechs, to provide a good amount of cover between all drawbacks of each design/weapon loadout. A lance of scouts, or a lance of assaults could pretty easily take out a lance of all one 'mech, hell, even a lance of Catapults could take them all out. All you'd need is three Catapults, and one scout 'mech with the Arrow IV system, and BAM! LRM's all up in there. From behind a hill.

Basically, if you see someone fielding all of one 'mech type, develop a tactic to counter that, and they won't do it again.

If they allow it in game you will see it and probably fairly more common then you think. But as time goes on after release players will find that its not that effective because other players have become aware of how to beat the tactic.

I see a field full of "Awesomes".. i take light mechs and lots of flamers.

I see a field full of Hunchbacks, I take Catapults.

There's always an equalizer.

If you can see the enemy Lance you'll be facing ahead of time (I don't know why you would or everyone would just wait until the last second to select) then running all Awesomes or Hunchbacks might be a viable tactic.

If you're blind dropping only having one mech options will be suicide against even moderately skilled players. Think about it from this perspective, a tank is just about the king of the modern battlefield, if you've got room to manuever. So while a tank can theoretically take out anything it encounters you don't try to drive one into the jungle or through a dense urban enviroment.

Single mech lances are just mechboats in macro, they'll work pretty well until the rest of the players find the weakness, then they're pointless.

But that's jsut my take.

I picturing 4 downfacing, shutdown, red hot steaming Awesomes with Jenners running around them and catapult missiles flying from the mountains.

A lance is like a bunch of people fandancing naked. As long as everyone works to gether, no one gets exposed or left unsupported. A lance of huncbacks or Atlases or any other single mech has to deal with the fact that weapons are the same. There is no real way to cover each other's weakness(es). A lance of AC20 being mechs trying to bring their weapons to bear on a lance of manuvering lights will have a major problem especially if there is a support lance/unit(s) raining LRMs down on them. Think in terms of team play.

I guess the hard part is going to be that group-work, because my expirence in simular games is that everyone works as a lone-wolf and it turns into groups of miss-matched combatants. I would be happy to be proven wrong, but the reality is more often than not (Especially in early play) you are going to be alone, and at best follow one person and try to support him, but expecting support from your lance is expecting a strainer to hold water, it just isnt going to happen.

That being said, if all the mechs of a lance are the same, all it is going to take is one person chosing a mech to exploit the weakness and suddenly start running the field. Worse still, if you run into 2-4 players actually working as a group, you're likely to be cut off, segmented, and destroyed as indivisuals.

Re: OP Matchmaking will help with balancing teams/tonnage/BV etc. We haven't revealed the full formula, as we are still tuning and testing the best way to handle it.
