Everyone has seen a video or two of building demolition; remember how much dust is kicked up? Now imagine what will happen with a bunch of 'mechs firing off weapons in a city. While lasers probably wouldn't do much, significant ballistic or missile fire could quickly reduce visibility to almost nothing.

So the question is: what kind of dust effects do you want?

I want it as realistic as possible. If a building goes down, I want a massive plume of dust, why? Because that's a way to get away, or fire blindly into the dust. Plus there will be vision modules that could see through dust.

But how long do you want to wait for that dust cloud to dissipate? Dust can take quite a while to settle in real life.

Well, it would depend on the weather conditions. Windy, it blows away, raining, it dissipates quickly. If the wind is calm, then it would take about between 10 to 20 minutes even for enough dust to settle that you can sorta see. For all the dust to settle, half hour to 45 minutes.

I voted hardcore, but I was thinking less than 30 minutes certainly. More like 10 or 15. Additionally, will/would dust affect drones/radar? I know it probably shouldn't, but being able to waste a SRM on a structure as a form of primitive radar jamming would be kind of cool.

Have you been there? :D

I have no problem with dust. Up until the point it plugges the whole PC, or mom "asks" me to clean it.
So yes for the dust in the game. It will really help our beloved lights and seeing a Victor on a skyscrapper by some exploit will be marvelous. ^_^

I voted for Hardcore...after all we want realism and be able to use our mods aka sensors to track and target enemies..

just watch that old mechwarrior movie intro when the Warhammer steps up to THE Atlas and scream 'my god' kinda says it all.

I like the idea of lots of dust, although half an hour to settle seems kinda ridiculous for a game. It would be nice if it jams radar though, that creates lots of tactical possibilities.

Just to be clear, when I say half hour, I mean as there is a dusty haze still lingering in the air. Nothing that would affect performance of sensors or vision, really. 10 15 minutes tops for the actual radar effects.

Keep in mind effects like that annihilate even somewhat older video cards, and would put massive pressure on even new ones.

Keep in mind, we are supposed to think of awesome stuff, and the devs are supposed to annihilate our hopes and dreams. :D

Hahaha, I'm not saying don't come up with ideas, I'm just pointing out where there are physical limitations - heavy particle effects are a massive draw on modern cards. So perhaps we can think of a similar idea, with that limitation in mind?

Or, you know, realistic limitations of graphical technology. >_>

Smoke/dust brings up a whole new stragegic paradigm, it's a great idea.

It doesn't necessarily have to be a particle effect. Could be a change in the atmosphere with 2D sprites, like snow and rain.... If that's how the engine works. I'm not familiar with CryEngine3 that much. Then again, particle affects would look best....
