Personally I'm big on the catapult. With it's silly ears and big nose.

I have played 20 years and more with the origianl 3025 mechs and to my experience the best mech are, class wise:
Jenner (no srm and more jump and armor version)
Phoenix Hawk (no MG and more HS)
Warhammer WHM-6K (no MG and more HS)
Banshee BNC-3S (similar to Awesome but almost an Atlas' armor and more efficient in close combat)

Are we talking best IS or Clan 'mech?
Battlemech or Omnimech?
Best Light, Medium, Heavy or Assualt 'mech?
Best support, front lines, scout.... 'mech?
Time Frame? Pre-Succession war? 2nd, 3rd, 4th Succession War? Invasion? Jihad? Darkage?
Or just best 'mech overall? (A.k.a. your favorite)

Well thats kind of a problem, my favorite 'mech isn't exactly the paragon of all 'mechs. But I'd have to go with Avatar. Jack of all trades, can fill any role and still packs a punch. But its not even close to "the best" since naturally a Clan Omni will be slightly superior in terms of raw technology or weapons. But even then, said superior 'mech isn't the best, because it can't by nature be the best at everything.

The best Mech is the one that you put hours of playtime in to until it all becomes second nature. And the best Mech for that is the one that best suits your style.
I certainly won't know which one is the best until I get a few hours under my seat in a few of them. I'm hoping it's a Medium with a balanced load out that covers all the ranges with the medium to close range well covered. But it could be a Heavy or even a "heavier" Light.
Speed, maneuverability, turning radius, torso twist speed. Load out, weapon recharge time, ammo rounds, beam weapons. Armor and size (height). These are just a few of my favorite things.

It's just cheating. I can create an uber mech from scratch with all the tech they produced the last few years.
While I am at it I'll just whip up a my new omni-Agesis Heavy Cruiser refit and start an orbital bombardement and nuke whoever is left.
The beauty of the BT world is no one mech does it all. There were times when the lowly Locust did some things very well for a light mech.
I love em all. I love to drive a few and shoot at the rest.
One of the better all round ones for me was the Banshee. It filled out sevral roles when it came to an assault.
