A fusion reaction is held in check by a magnetic field as any science fiction fan (or scientist) will tell you. So since a mech is fusion powered I could theoreticly destroy it by sticking a big magnet to it so that the magnetic field holding the reaction in check would be distrupted enough to allow the reactor to go critical. This means I can destroy a mech with a wreckers yard magnet or MRI scanner.
Come to think of it this applys to spacemarines in WH40K asewell.
Did the origonal Devs really make such a mistake or did I get somthing wrong.

all computers and most electronic devices can be killed by a magnetic pulse as in Electro Magnetic Pulse or EMP. Yet current tech of military grade is shielded from the very same pulses and Hence we can do it, I presume they could do that as well in BattleTech. So, no they have not made a mistake.

don't forget about the time constant throughout the inner sphere

Wrong.
1. Shielding prevents that.
2. When fusion between nuclei is no longer occuring, the reaction stops. There is no explosion, or flaring, or anything of the sort. It just stops.
3. The magnetic forces holding fusion together is between 10-10000 megawatts (depending on fuels and tech level). A little horseshoe magnet has absolutely nothing on that.
Mechs going "critical" happen when the reactor crumples and the plasma touches the walls of the reactor, heating it to about 10 million degrees shortly.

Two things...
1. The engine has a HUGE magnetic field- any magnet you throw at it is just going to do... nothing
2. They already tried to use this idea in the form of MP Missles. Didn't really work. http://www.sarna.net...c-Pulse_Warhead
