I noticed in one of the ask the devs that they said they wouldn't allow canon named units to be created/controlled by players.
(Unless I misunderstood that).

That is correct. The original, player run GDL renamed itself Death's Hand Brigade quite some time ago. There are, in fact, quite a number of player run units that were originally named for canon units that have since rebranded themselves.

As stated above, the Death's Hand Brigade was, at an earlier point in MWO's history, planning to be and had reserved the Gray Death Legion.

I at a much earlier point in my life played for and ran Gray Death Legion mercenaries in a Mechwarrior league and wanted to restart fresh with MWO.

Sadly, though I understand why PGI chose to do it, all canon mercenary corporations cannot be controlled by players, and as such we had to come up with a different name and story for ourselves.

Thus we were renamed the Death's Hand Brigade, though we still consider ourselves Gray Death Legion in spirit, retaining the same motto of 'Strength Through Unity'. However, for the purposes of MWO and working within the coming meta-game we are Death's Hand Brigade.

True. To be honest, we're a bit short on small arms at the moment. But once the fighting starts I'm sure you'll be able to find one. Good Luck!
