Is this one of those "free to play" games that costs a forture really? Just want to know in advance before I waste my time thinking about it.

Free to Play, not Pay to Win. They will not be selling player power, unless spending money to make your mech look like a pretty pretty princess is power (NOT... unless you are Paul).

This is contrary to what they've said in the past. They said you can't buy player skill because that comes thru experience and tends to be the largest factor in deciding victors. From what I understand everything in terms of game effecting stuff you could buy you could also obtain without buying (think tribes ascend, any of the weapons you can buy you can also just unlock with XP you earn from playing.)

No, remember? They stated in the latest Developer Blog that painting your 'mech pink just allows Paul's targeting systems to automatically lock on to you, regardless of line of sight.
