"Holmes, you take care of your mother now." Hard brown eyes stared down, struggling to remain dry. Fingers tightened around the 7-year-old boy's shoulders as his father sighed, head dropping down. The world seemed silent and timeless, though Holmes could barely register the stampeding steps in the hallway outside their room. The metal door, silver and shining with a new polish, masked reality. Although he knew it could not happen, the boy simply wished nothing would change. He leaned in and wrapped his arms around his father's neck, hugging him tight. Nearby his mother sobbed.
"You'll be a good, strong man Holmes." He winked and pushed the boy away as he turned on his heels and headed to the door. With a short nod back to the two, he opened the door. Cries, explosions, the whir of a flight. And with that, father Nets was gone, the door sliding shut leaving only a quiet murmur of noise outside.
But Holmes did not cry, for he was proud. His father, the MechWarrior, defending Nova Roma against a battalion of unknown foes. Engines shouted to life below him as the JumpShip screamed upwards... out of the atmosphere... into a new life.
----------------------------
Although he had been on the force only since 3026, when he had turned eighteen, Holmes Nets had risen quickly through the policing ranks. After escaping from Nova Roma to Marik, he had finished schooling and been accepted into an early-recruit program at the local police academy on Marik. It was a difficult decision to make- his mother was returning to Nova Roma and to accept the position was to leave her. But, with her reassurance ("I'll be fine alone, Holmes") he graciously entered the academy.
A year later, he was on Angell II, dealing with the rough streets and discontented lower class. It was his integrity that eventually dealt him the unfortunate send-off to New Hope. Promotion to investigative ranks occurred after only 2 years, and Detective Nets found himself often at odds with Angell's corrupt upper class. After the arrest and subsequent (and questionable) forgiveness of a political figure on the planet, Nets was sent to New Hope.
Here, Nets struggled against constant bereavement- the force was paid entirely by the principle city's mayor. Police work was shabby at best and truth was a fallacy.
Eventually, frustration and exhaustion reeled and Nets parted ways from the city. His time away from the force was intolerable. Still on New Hope, former coworkers often would attempt to pin crime on their rival Nets. Eventually, Nets could handle it no longer and, knowing how his skill sets could be useful, boarded the first ship to Solaris to look for mercenary work.
Deep Background:
Holmes' father, Daniel Nets, was a Senior Grade Lieutenant in the FWL army, tasked with aiding in the defense of Nova Roma. A small agricultural world, Nets was one of the highest officers on the world when Nova Roma was attacked. Fearing for his family's safety, he sent them off-planet as soon as the mercenary force arrived in 3014. Although he and his lance were defeated, he survived the onslaught and gained the respect of the Wolf's Dragoons, who, after minor losses on the planet, needed to refill some of their ranks. Elder Nets, although weighted down with betrayal, agreed to join in with the mercenaries.
Although appearing strong, forward and confident, Holmes struggles against his past. He 'knows' his father is dead, and was forced to abandon his mother as she returned to Nova Roma, himself entering the police academy. Often attempting to balance this inner struggle (which he does not actually recognize), Nets can act cocky and overconfident. He also has a tendency to leap before thinking.
Such an attitude is the reality of his leaving New Hope. An 'investigation' by the police force saw a group of corrupt officers raid Holmes' off-city home. The allegations were ridiculous, but the agents moved in for the arrest. Enraged, Holmes fought back and a firefight soon raged. Holmes survived with only minor scratches- but the police bodies that littered his home would not bode well. After doing his best to cover and delay, he rode to the nearest JumpShip to Solaris- a place he knew he would be safe, for at least some time- and was off.
