Alex couldn't believe his luck

"Ammo in the the right torso cooked off blasting a hole through it and the right arm was also trashed, I also need to make sure no internals were damaged as the blast knocked the mech down with quite allot of force" he'd explain the drag marks when they got there. Was quite a fight, the guy pretty much crippled my Panther before I could take him down, but I thought it went rather well for my 1st mech battle" Alex took a sip of the drink the bartender had given to him and slid some C-Bills across the bar.

"A rookie eh? Well, knowing a Clint, by the sound of things there is a chance you may have cored the reactor through the autocannon ammo not being happy about getting hit, and popping off in multiple directions other than outward, but I'd have to take a look at it to tell you anything for certain. I'd give it a 75% chance by what you've told me that it's salvageable, but like I said I'd need to see it to tell you any real information." Said Frederick, taking a bite of his teriyaki.

"That said, it wouldn't be free, although depending on circumstance would depend on how I might like to be paid." he added, looking over at Alex, letting out a sigh and shaking his head.

"So what's your name by the way, if I may ask?" Frederick asked, taking a look at Alex. He seemed honest enough. Then again, looks could be deceiving. But to his knowledge no one had a grudge on him. Well, no one alive at least. He could think of a few dead Lyran pilots who were probably making complaints in the afterlife. And if nothing else, if he was lucky he might get at least someone on this rock as a friend if he was lucky, along with some spare parts or extra C-bills. And if this guy decided to try something stupid then he'd find out his mistake quickly enough.

Bertie shrugged, and glanced at Frederick. “I’m game if you are.” As much as sleep beckoned, getting a look at another potential home for his Enforcer trimmed some time from tomorrow. And he was interested in seeing how badly trashed the Clint was.

Beside him, Heather had pushed the half-finished bowl of soup away and was playing with the coasters again.

Frederick shrugged, finishing up his food. "Sure I'll take a look at it." said Frederick simply, looking over at Bertie. He was surprised they were this trusting of him, without even knowing his name. Ah well. Hopefully he could get something out of this evening, then curl up in bed.

Bertie stood up and tapped his daughter on the shoulder. “Come on, you. We’re going to have a look at a ‘mech.”

“But I’ve seen your ‘mech.”

“Not mine, that guy’s,” he said, pointing at Alex, “He’s just won a big battle, and now he’s got two ‘mechs! Don’t worry, you can bring the coasters.”

Alex lead the 2 men and little girl to the mech bay he was keeping the Panther and Clint, most of the bays were empty, apart from the Clint and Panther there were only 3 other mechs including the Trebuchet hed burnt the paint off of. He stopped dead centre of the mech bay and pointed at the Panther cobbled together with scrap and the Clint that was Swiss cheesed. He then turned to gauge the reactions of the strangers hed just pulled in.

"I'm Bertie, and this is Heather. Not sure what his name is." Bertie let out a low whistle as he looked over the Clint. "Wow. Really did a number on him. I'm not even sure if it'll stand again, but I don't really know Clints."

He pointed at the Panther. "As for your own 'mech, it looks like you've lost some coolant and a bucket-load of armour, but they're fairly easy fixes. Shouldn't there be an SRM4 there, though? Did you scavenge it, or is it still on the field?"

If it was fresh from the factory their would be but i had a real tight budget, I bought the internal structure from an auction and the PPC is from a scrapped Vindicator. Ive managed to buy some small lasers and that's about it, pretty much everything else was salvaged from scrap. I spent about 500,000 C-Bills on it, then the PPC overloaded with me still inside, fusing itself to the Chassis, so that's a permanent installation." Alex shuddered and Cringed a little remembering the the pain that caused, the overload put me in hospital, I only got out a few days ago".

"As for the Clint, I know nothing about it. I don't even know who the pilot was." Alex realised how bad that must have sounded and desperately tried to explain himself..

"Don't worry I didn't kill the pilot. This Clint ambushed me in the proving grounds yesterday. I took it down and when I got to it the pilot was gone. Most of it is a bit of a blur, I hit my head pretty hard during the battle. I have no idea what motive he had to attack me but after the battle I decided I wasn't going through all that for nothing so I dragged his Clint back here. There are no markings or personal belongings and the techs who were here earlier haven't seen it in any matches, so im claiming the mech as mine"

"Odd. I wonder who would use a Clint for something like that, given how old all of them are... Anyhow, have you had your PPC's capacitors checked?" Asked Frederick, as he started down to take a closer look at the Clint.

"You can call me Vulpes by the way." He added as he looked down at the mech. From the angle of the damage it didn't look like the reactor was damaged... but he couldn't be sure yet. Getting down to the 'mech, he made a point to look into the hole that had been blasted. Taking out his pocket flashlight to see things a bit more clearly, he whistled.

"Well, the internal structure is embedded in multiple directions, and it looks like when a couple of the rounds cooked off they decided to aim for the hips. Doesn't look like the center torso was breached though... although there is plenty of armor missing. Any more and this girl probably would have been cored." sighed Frederick, taking a look down. "She'll need the damaged right torso skeleton replaced, and what's stuck down near the hip taken out. The hip's myomer bundles will have to be replaced along with the torso, and of course you have a missing arm." He sighed, looking over the rest of the mech. "Looks like one of the medium lasers got damaged too, and you have scrapes in the armor in a number of places... but I would say it's salvageable. The engine and systems look to be intact, the majority of the structure seems undamaged, but she'll need a bit of help to get on her feet." added Frederick, sighing and walking over to take a look at the gyro. Sighing and shaking his head, he looked to see if there was anything else damaged he may have missed. "By the way, the gyro will need to be replaced too it seems." he added as he looked.

"Sounds like allot of work to me" Alex sighed and shook his head "and no doubt ill need assistance at some point"
Alex stopped to way up his options.

"Vulpes, would you be interested in helping repair this Clint, there'd be C-Bills in it for you. If not are their any parts you'd be interested in buying from it, I could arrange for your mech to be brought here" Alex turned to Bertie "Same offer goes to you, and I can get your mech here if you have one" that card was going to be a blessing, One thing Alex learned yesterday is he needed to make some friends or one day he'll go into the proving grounds and not comeback, and not a soul would care. He was taking a risk by trusting strangers but neither of them looked like the typical back stabbing scum you see day to day on the streets of Solaris.

"Yeah I figure I can help. We'll have to get to ordering some parts though. And judging by the looks of your panther, it will need some new parts too." Said Frederick, sighing and looking up. "Though if I may ask, how much is the pay you're willing to give?" he chuckled taking a look over at the Clint. This was going to be a bit of work, though it may turn out amusing. Though she definitely was pretty torn up.

"We can negotiate a pay later but for now ill offer you a space in the mech bay and twice minimum wage for your services"
Alex had no idea how much techs cost, he'd never hired any before he'd have to look into, but hopefully he'd just given Vulpes a good offer

"I already have a hanger for my Mech, and that's a bit low on the pay." said Frederick, raising an eyebrow. That wasn't much. Besides, he was a pilot, not a tech. It would take more than that to pull him away from enjoying the town in his spare time. But still, the kid probably needed it. Sighing, he looked at Alex. "How about two and a half times minimum, plus you promise to help me in the future should I need it?" Asked Frederick, hoping that in a worst case scenario at least he might be able to get repairs if things went horribly wrong.

“Heck, kid, if you can get me a space here, and give me assistance in kind, we’ll call it even.” Bertie said, with a glance around the bay. “Just to make it clear, though, I don’t have much experience except with my own ride. You may still need to get in a professional for the tricky stuff.”

There was a loud clang echoed through the bay from behind him. Beside a small stack of armour plates that had slumped from a shelf, Heather stood like a rabbit caught in a headlight.

“Sweetie, you can look, but don’t touch, please,” Bertie admonished.

"Hi, I'm looking for Mr. Kirov?" Dan addressed the pretty secretary at the desk.
"I'm afraid he's still not here Mr. Abnett." Erin replied. "We haven't seen him in a few days now. I...I heard the boys saying they thought he might have ended up in trouble while he was out recruiting...there were those awful murders..." A tear rolled down her cheek.
Dan shifted his feet uncomfortably. "I'm sure he's fine miss." He hesitated, "I'm sorry to ask, but if Mr. Kirov is away, who makes the decisions around here? I need to get my employer's medical bills paid for immediately."
The woman's eyes flashed. "Oh, that would be me. But I couldn't make a decision without meeting your mechwarrior. Is there a time when I could speak with him?"
That...was an odd transition. "Of course, his visiting hours are in a few hours and he's nearly ready for release mi-"
"Ma'am will do thank you." She beamed at him. "When are they?"
Jack is not going to like her...

The three went their separate ways not long after. Bertie could see that Heather was getting tired, and a storm front was beginning to roll in from the sea. He hailed down a taxi to take them back to the hotel.

The next day, Bertie carefully shuffled his Enforcer into the 'Mech space. Alex had been true to his word, and Bertie had been contacted earlier that morning with an offer for space. The 'Mech slowly approached the gantry of Bay 016, before settling into its parked stance.

"Entering maintenance mode. Sensors offline. Auxiliary systems offline. Reactor offline. Primary capacitors discharged. Weapons confirmed safe. Engaging limb locking pins. BattleMech ready for maintenance."

Back when he’d been in the New Ivaarsen Chasseurs, that voice had been Kathy’s, and would have closed with a cheeky welcome home. Since Alrescha, though, that had been too painful; now, the Enforcer’s computer spoke with a nearly emotionless asexual voice he’d bought on Outreach.

Bertie stowed his neurohelmet in its compartment and pulled a set of overalls on, leaving his shorts and coolant vest on underneath. He cracked open the top hatch and began to climb out as the LoaderMech carrying his supplies arrived.

“Where d’yer want it?” the driver called up from the open cockpit. Bertie gestured roughly to an open patch to the side of the bay, hopefully out of the way enough that it wouldn’t obstruct his ‘Mech’s movement.

Frederick yawned, rolling over in bed and after taking a look at the time, stretching out and scratching his head. "Morning already..." he yawned, as he got up and got himself ready to head out. He figured he would go by the practice fields today, see about when there was a match he could enter in, and see about that clint that needed repairs. After noting he didn't have any food in the apartment yet, he also made a note to go get groceries.

Frederick stretched in the cockpid of his 'mech. He had missed her. Walking out onto the field, he started checking each of his 'mech's joins one by one, checking his balance and then started to warm up his jumpjets. Taking a sixty meter leap, he landed softly, and he brought his Clint to a jog. Taking a few clean shots on targets at 300 to 400 meteres with his medium lasers, he continued on, getting himself warmed up. He wasn't really comfortable without his mech for such a long period of time as he was on that dropship.

Frederick continued to fluently run his 'mech through excersizes, enjoying simply being back in her.

Zapp!

The scarlet ray of the laser sythed (I love that word) it's way through the gravel and into the wreckage of the old car. Making stones pop and explode as the brillant beam flash boiled the moisture out of the rocks. DeMarkus scanned the damage with a critical eye and grimaced, the laser would have to be recalibrated. It was at least 3 degrees off, but without the proper equipment the only way to judge would be to eyeball it. He elevated the arm slightly and adjusted the arm to what he thought would be on target. The arm wasn't pointed exactly at the skeletal frame up above it and to the right. He slowly sqeezed the trigger and the scarlet beam shot out slagging the frame.

"Heh."

He made a mental note to have Kaylee or Rick take a look at it. He sighed turning One-Eye and threw the throttle forward and the Commando stomped forward. Within seconds he was at top speed. He stomped on a petal planting One-Eye's foot and shooting off in another direction. He continued zigzagging for awhile trying to push the light mech to the limit. A burm loomed on up ahead and he raced straight for it. The Commando slamed into the earthworks and it's speed was drastically cut. He leaned the mech forward into the slope...

Thud, thud, thud...

Warning lights flashed on his console, looking them over he saw indicators for his gyro and six launched located next to it.

"OH S**T!!" He exclaimed while bringing the mech to a screeching halt.

Once stopped the lights blinked a few times then went away. A cold shiver ran down his spine. He still had ten live missiles fused to his chasis and if his gyroscope was banging into them...

He decided that he had pushed One-Eye as far as he was going to be able to without blowing himself up and figured it was time to return to the mechspace.
