Since I have not had any experience with any of the non-videogame aspects of battletech, I basically chose a house based on general political and cultural qualities, and condensed histories of each. Since I've only ever had the occasional choice of Steiner/Davion, I made it a point to avoid the lyran commonwealth and federated suns. I figured those would be well-populated, but variety is the spice of life.

When I discovered that I was willing to put up with a less-interesting banner just so I could declare House Marik, I knew I had found the right one for me.

Davion, because FedCom, the only bright beacon of roughly sane unity for the Innersphere. I also don't mind the idea of spreading freedom on the surface while being completely imperialistic on the inside.

Not Steiner, because Kathrine, and will never be Steiner, because Katherine.
Not Liao, because of the severe discord between ideological views.
Not Marik, any numbers of reasons, most prominent is the livery.
Not Combine, not a particular fan of the government style. Decent third choice though.
Not FRR, because I'm not sure how the clans are going to be handled. Second choice though if I can punch clanner face in and don't get Dues ex Machina'ed.

Can't pick Calderon, Centrella, O'Reilly, Avellar, or Grimm, so :\

In my old TT days, I was the only player for Clan Coyote. I was damned proud of it, too. Held my worlds, solo, and even earned the right to take a respectable chunk of the Fedcoms. But I digress.

With the current selections, the code of Bushido matches closest with my Clanner roots.

Doesn't that make Lone Wolf playing more suitable for you? Don't get me wrong, I'd like to have extra Kurita MechWarriors anytime, but curious as to why you'd pick faction play specifically.

I see a lot of hate for Katherine, I don't get it. She just took back her House and made it what it should have been. The alliance with Davion? Horrible. I give you the Cappellan Confederation? C'mon, Davion is the evil one here. I don't blame Katherine one bit for separating from that sort. Sure she made some mistakes, but who hasn't? Davion just wanted us for all our moneys, mechz, and hawties.

No really, Katherine is /not/ all of the Lyran Alliance/Commonwealth anymore than all of Liao and Kurita is Asian. Quantifying a like is often difficult. Why do I like House Steiner and why will I fight for them? I just do. Mock Steiner all you want about our tactics and mechs, long story short I like Steiner because it's fun for me and I can get behind them.

Besides strong leaders are loved and hated with equal measure.

I like big 'Mechs and killing Clanners - but Katherine didn't break the Federated Commonwealth up for the Lyran half's benefit, she did it because she was a wicked witch who wanted power. She wasn't a strong leader, just a manipulative one. Doom on her.
