if yours can run crysis 2, I assume it's fine to run MWO

simplest way to look at it is you want the best specs you can get
if you can run battlefield 3,witcher2 or any other highly taxing game in high or better you will be more than ready for MWO
if you cant run crysis2 ..... start saving lots and lots of money
this website is a good place to compare your rig to what other games are demanding (needs java)
quite helpful when you dont want to just go buy games to stress test your machine
with every new feature that requires an advanced video effect (Google and learn about "shaders" if your in the dark here)
that the developers add, it will push up the minimum system requirements, especially if they deem said effect to be vital to game play
(this could be something like a specific heat effect on your screen if you fire a ppc) as it may break the game balance if players are allowed to turn this visual feature off, it becomes enforced and the system specs rise along with it
most of the time individual features are handled by the engine as is, but with any game not specifically in the same category as the game the engine was designed for (crysis is a FPS, MWO is a mech sim) you need to add more and more things to achieve all the effects you desire
so while crysis2 is a good solid base to compare your Rig too, MWO is likely going to have higher requirements

By an "average" laptop i am assuming in the $400-750 range?
In which case you'll want an AMD A8 APU in your Laptop.

A step down is an A6 APU.

Trinity should be too any time now, shouldn't it? The "average" laptop isn't going to run games, period, since the average laptop is running a mediocre processor and integrated Intel graphics, but it's certainly possible to get a laptop at "average price" that'll do sort of okay.
OP, is there some particular reason as to why you need a laptop? That's usually the first question to ask anyone buying one for gaming. A desktop will net you far better performance for the price.

maybe he needs laptop for mobility, work, and some occasional gaming...
and like Catamount said, average laptop (even a bit higher) won't run game as smooth as $1000-1100 PC.
but if you insist on laptop, I recommend Asus G53SX (around $1400-1500)

I'm not sure of laptop APUs, which I believe are slated for late US Q1 2012 (which means May-June) and that the desktop FM2 motherboards won't drop till June, and the desktop processors in July for Trinity. I believe that ULV APUs come out in late summer / early fall. Just basing it by what I've read.
Anyhow, yeah for the same cost you can build / buy a better desktop if you already have a monitor and a mouse/KB if you're sub $600. At $~700 your best bet is going to be a desktop.
Though it partially depends on your budget.
Sub-$1000 for a laptop, for the most part your best bet now is an AMD A8, after trinity comes out an AMD A10. Over $1000 you have some more gaming options that will be better, such as that Asus model.

We still need to make sure that's really what the OP wants though

You could get one that would run the Crysis 2 at a subpar frame rate for about $1,000.
Of course, this is just the engine. MWO might keep the graphics as such that a $1,000 laptop could run the game very well. Unlike the first Crysis, Crysis 2 was optimized for consoles* and it's engine is considerably better. We'll have to see.
* Thank God for the console generations lasting so long. It's resulted in some really optimized engines from what we saw some years back, as nobody would ever make an engine that's not console-friendly. There's a reason a 4 year old computer can run BF3 at 50FPS. It's made PC gaming viable again without the processor arms race.

ASUS G74SX
That said, if you MUST have a laptop, look into the video performance of models you're considering. A regular $400 Wally World Special isn't going to cut it.
