This really is an issue. It is incredibly annoying to think of something great only to realize the build is completely unviable because of lack of slots, too much heat etc. There needs to be a way to allow us to play around in mechlab outfitting different mechs before we have to purchase anything. I cannot imagine it would be difficult in the slightest.

Slots play a major factor too now, and you cant play around with having ferro-fibrious, endo, double heatsinks etc to use up as many slots as you can without spending a huge amount of C-bills to add and remove them. And you cannot play around in mech lab with mechs you dont own, so you don't even know if a certain weapon combination would even work in a mech before you buy it.

Are you asking to customize trial mechs or complaining about having to play 2 matches to get enough money to customize your existing mech?
Edit: ah, yeah, below post fits better.

It is coming.

Also you actually can play around in mechlab without having enough c-bills so long as you have anything other than a trial mech. You just can't actually buy what you cannot pay for. This allows you to find your optimal loadout and discover what you need to save up for. You can also plot out your acquisition sequence.

I'm pretty sure that his complaint comes from the need to save between modules, camo spec, upgrades, and loadout. It was a loud complaint following last week's patch. The answer two his question, though will come as a shocker.

"Because there hasn't been another patch, yet."

I know, it's crazy--but software spontaneously fixing/writing itself is still a long ways off, so the need to save our build between phases will last for at least a few more hours, or maybe event *gasp* another seven days.

Beyond the "changing between tabs" thing (that's getting fixed soon™) it would be nice to be able to put expensive things in (like XL engines) just to see speed/heat dissipation/etc... Get the whole picture and then hit cancel.

Right now, if you try to do that and any single item is too expensive for you. It says you don't have money. (go ahead and try "testing" a XL engine that costs 4 M C-Bills if you only have 1 M C-Bill - the lab won't let you even test it)

PS: by testing I mean putting it in the mech and looking at the stats on the left. You should NOT be able to launch with a Mech you cannot afford.
