used the search function but can't find the post that explains how many engine slots for HS you get with which engine. can anyone help?

Check Ohmwrecker's reference sheets. One of the engine ones lists all engines, and has a chart that shows the HS included in every engine. His thread is stickied at the top of this forum.

Just divide the engine size by 25 and round down. The first ten are in the engine and can't be modified. A 275 or above has slots in which you can enter the additional HS over ten and up the limit (engine/25 rounded down)
