Was any reason given for the weight increases on engines?

I could think of a bunch, but did any dev actually say why?

No "real" weight increase, the cockpit weight was just moved from the mech to the engine.

It's still a bit awkward how it all adds up, especially with the supposedly tonnage free heat sinks (the ones that sit outside an engine rated less than 250). Makes it a bit confusing to check the math.

The engine weights were modified to the following:

Reference table top value + weight of cockpit (3 tons) + weight of gyro (1 to 3 tons depending on engine size) - weight of any required heat sinks NOT installed in the engine.

Every engine comes with 10 heat sinks ... engines can only hold rating/25 heat sinks ... so smaller engines have to allocate additional heat sinks in critical space but there is no additional weight cost for these. MWO resolved this issue by removing the weight of the mandatory heat sinks from the revised engine weights which included cockpit and gyro. I think this may have been done to avoid negative engine weights for very small engines.
