I notice that quite a few people (including the devs) have both a name and a call sign. In my case "Turbo" is my callsign, not my first name.

I think it would be nice to be able to create a character with both a name and a callsign, then have options for how it displays.

Options such as:
firstname "callsign" lastname
"callsign" lastname
"callsign"

Seems to me that would be a simple thing to implement that would be really nice for the community. I'd suggest that the "callsign" be the unique name that identifies a character, and the first name and surname be for display purposes only. Surnames could also be shared among multiple mechwarriors on the same account (assuming we get to create multiple avatars) if the player wishes it.

Actually, I think this is important to clarify. I know I found it confusing when people started using the "reserve your callsign!" picks on things that looked like actual names. Which should I be reserving?

Personally, I think only callsigns should need to be unique. There's multiple John Smiths in this world, so it's conceivable that there might be another Ray Corvair. The downside of this is that there will also be about four hundred Natasha Kerenskys.

Well I decided I'd better reserve my callsign by itself and it's already taken, now the question is whether I had the foresight to reserve it myself or someone else grabbed it!?

Just reserve the canon names so they cannot be used (because it's seriously dumb to see them and they may be needed for 'events' down the road).

I've always referred to the devs as First name 'Callsign' Last name (if given, I'm not going to go looking for info), as it should be, however as the player base, people don't always like to give out their info on the net.

Whatever works.

By "real name" I would assume that to refer to a fake real name that corresponds to an invented character in CBT. Sgt James Whatshisface of the AFFS, callsign "Freekill". Doesn't have to be my actual name unless I want it to be.

precisely, I didn't mean your actual real name, I meant the first and last name of the avatar

What, so the name I reserved isn't the name that'll ID me in-game? Balls.

With all due respect, I don't want ANY of you to know any more about my real-life details than I have to provide, thank you very much.

If you wanna deal with me, you've already got my 'callsign' right over there, and that's all I expect PGI to provide to anyone without my expressed written authorization.

...and now I read the last couple of posts, and my post is pretty much invalidated.

But still this: I don't have any RP character or 'persona' beyond that callsign, so regardless whatever PGI impements from your suggestion, I'm leaving it blank...
