Can I get a break down on the ranges for weapons? The lasers and guns I think I can understand. The number to the right of the weapon is the effective range or lower, right? and it turns green?

The PPC weapons. I think that's right, have a range that dictates how far away you have to be from the target before you can use it. I.E. I have to be 100 away from target to use the weapon. Will that turn green also?

Last but not least, what is the maximum and minimum range of the LRM/SRM? and will that also turn green when i can use them?

Thanks for the replys

Edit: is there a graphics config around I can work with? I feel that I get a lot of white out in the snow maps and a lot of green/hazy in the other maps. I have my setting at max.

Thanks

The "Turning green" function is a little misleading since it's based on where your cursor is pointed specifically. Since you're not often pointing your cursor directly at an enemy mech when launching LRMs, it may or may not change color properly.

PPCs have a minimum range of 90M, and will deal reduced damage at closer ranges. ER PPCs have no minimum range.

Most of the graphics config options are turned off in the launcher because they're working on implementing DX11 (Soon™, best guess 2 weeks). Advanced graphics configs can be tweaked through a USER.cfg file provided in the root directory. There was a repository on the forums for various levels of graphics settings that could be achieved with that file. I'm not sure where they were relocated to when the forums updated.

And yes, the number to the right of the weapon is the maximum ideal damage range. Most weapons (Barring the PPC and LRMs, as noted already) will do full damage up to that range, and then decreased damage beyond that range.

Example: Medium Lasers show a range of 200M. Thus, they do full damage from 0-200M, and have a linear damage decrease from 100% to 0% over 200M-400M. So, they would do 50% damage at 300M, and 25% damage at 350M.

Ballistics get a longer range dropoff (up to 3x ideal range), which also scales linearly.

Thanks for the reply and info. I'm confused by this statement though. If you're not pointing at an enemy mech when firing LRM's, where do they go? Are they homing?

They fly at where ever you pointed the reticle.

If you lose a lock, they fly to the last known enemy position (if you regain the lock they will start tracking again).

Yes they are homing if you have lock on the target. You don't need to point at them when you fire

On Weapon Ranges:

First the Numbers, and what you should now about them:
The Number next to the weapon is it's standard range for FULL damage. the Large Laser, for example is 100% effective up to 450m. But there is some non-odvious knowledge as well...
All Energy Weapons have a max range which is twice their standard range.
All Ballistic Weapons have a max range which is three times their standard range.
Your weapon does 100% damage at standard range and falls off to 0% damage at max range.
There are some weapons which don't follow this rule, but you can figure them out individually by understanding the colors.

Color Codes for Weapons
The weapon colors change based on where your target is pointed.
Weapons that are green are within their 100% damage window and will do full damage to whatever is under your target reticle.
Weapons that show yellow are between standard and max range and will do reduced damage to whatever is under your reticle.
Weapons that show grey/black are outside of their envelope and will do zero damage when fired at whatever is under the reticle.

Some weapons have a minumum range, and will go black at close ranges, LRMs are an example, so pay attention to this.
