First, the player selects a primary colour. This is the base colour of the BattleMech.
This underlying colour also affects the primary colour in a camo pattern as well.
The available colours will vary based on default colours provided by the game and possibly purchased ones which are more exotic.

Players then select the secondary and tertiary colours. These colours can be considered the highlight colours of a pattern.

Note: Selecting bright pink as any colour level results in Paul’s weapon systems automatically locking on to your ‘Mech whether visible or not. Just a heads up.

This is a good thing. Target autolock on any pink on any mech. Progress is being made! What is interesting is that Pink is even a choice. Hmmmm.

What if... uh... the terrain is pink and you're just trying to blend in?!

Shouldn't it be purple or some hideous female-oriented derivation? Like Cerise or Mauve or Heliotrope? *shoot me*

There's a rumor that Paul told PGI that "No pink camo, no Paul".

Actually, this reminds me of an old PopSci article...

Quote

So why were the first F-117s painted soot black instead of a toned gray scheme that would provide better camouflage? One Lockheed engineer recalls that the commander of Tactical Air Command "didn't believe that real fighter pilots flew pastel-colored airplanes." One Air Force source close to the program says that some senior officers doubted the F-117 could survive in daylight, and wanted to ensure that nobody would try it.

Light colors would be optimal for the underside of the future Joint Strike Fighter. which will fly relatively low for ground attacks. Some experts say the best color for a fighter is pink, but pilots may object.

A few quick reasons why pink HAS to be an available camo colour:
1) The SAS found that painting their Land Rovers pink was better desert camo than a sandy beige. And if you want to walk up to one of those guys & question his manhood, be my guest. I'll just sweep up your teeth afterwards.
2) Rhonda Snord's Highlander is painted pink (& has speakers on the shoulders blaring Elvis tracks. Can we have that in Mech-Lab?).
3) Joey Nicholle (Jihad-era merc-leader) paints all of her mechs pink. It's become her trademark.
Pink mechs are canon! :P

Actually...

On a serious note, I'm very happy with the "in-game" decision. With this, the game controls the custom skins, so there is no need to download the cornucopia of custom player skins.

In a on-line air-combat game I played extensively... I accrued over 2 gig of customer paint schemes over the coarse of playing the sim for a year...

Yes, but will we have Paul-Homing Missiles (PHMs)? That is the question you should be asking.

YO MASON!!! Can you fix this guy's thread title? (Thanks!)

So you can pick a flat color or a 3-tier custom color camo overlay or a predefined skin and then top it all with (only 1?) insignia in predefined locations.

It definitely seems sufficient for basics. It's more military based since you can either choose "flat" or camo. I'm sure PGI might offer custom skin services for $$$ (I'd pay) and PGI themselves might actually have a reserved skin for their employees only.

I wish they'd at least give us the specs on the insignia so I could get to making some.

Well, remember. You're probably gonna only start with muted military colors. If you want the cosmetic "exotic" colors, you gotta buy it. (They way I figure, you pay a price, pick a any color and you get that "paint" available in your Mechlab to use on your chassis.

I'm not going to lie; I'll be sorely dissapointed if I can't deck my 'Mech out in gold-and-chrome-plating.

Green is for the money, and gold is for the honies.

I wonder if my Kintaro can have a platinum grill and sagging leg chassis.
